Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Ferry View to Milos
Ferry View to Milos
Our view from the ferry of Milos
Hello from Melissa! We have all arrived safely in Milos. Our day began hustling to pack all our items neatly back up in 6 backpacks and 2 rolling suitcases. The metro station was but a block away so 8 girls loaded themselves up with there luggage and purchased their 80 cent (euro) metro ticket to the ferry port. The Metro is very clean and fast, as we think it was redone for the latest Olympics in Greece. The ferry port is huge as it is used for passenger ferries and cargo ferries. Luckily, we booked a super fast ferry so our [View Full Entry]

Wow, I didn't realize how long it has been since I last posted anything. I have to really sit here and think of everything that I've done so far...I'll try my best and if I miss anything, I'll mention it later. Well, I've been to Pisa and seen the leaning tower, I will have to say that it's much smaller than I had imagined, but it was still impressive all the same. I did resist taking the really cheesy photo which everyone takes there. Position yourself just right, and you can make it look like your helping push the tower up [View Full Entry]

Its about 3:30 pm on June 6th, and KJ, Megs and Als are off to start their Acropolis walking tour (Yes, they arrived safely and are so far enjoying their adventure!). Jeanna, Aisha, Aditi, Jessica, and I (Melissa) started off around 9 am with coffee/coke to start our 20 min walk up the hill to the Acropolis. The Acropolis is currently under restoration but there was still plenty to see. Luckily, we went at a time before the droves of tourists came in so we could really take our time to view in awe of buildings that have been around since [View Full Entry]

There is one place in the world that without a doubt easily lays claim to single handily having the most profound effect on the way we live and think today. As the incubator of western civilisation, this country of great gods and goddesses, poets and philosophers, politicians and athletes; has bequeathed modern civilization with the building blocks of our society. I was always aware that English was derived through Latin but what I wasn’t aware of is Greek plays an almost equally important role as the root of the English language. Over a Mythos beer I think I could easily argue [View Full Entry]

Good Morning. Its just before 7 am here in Athens and I am enjoying a morning orange juice while waiting for Aisha and gang to finish getting ready so we can head out to Corinth. The sunset off of our hotel balcony is a stunning mix of orange, red, and pink overlooking the mountains opposite the Acropolis. The night lights of the Acropolis light the mountaintop on fire with such a glow that makes you want to climb up and look down over the city of Athens. The air this morning is crisp and the hotel is bustling with guests who [View Full Entry]

Well, Jared and I are now traveling back together again, and are now in Greece. Athens has been a crazy city, but a lot of fun. It seems to be the city that never sleeps. Jared and I got into the city at 1:00 a.m. and the city was still all awake and lively. It took us until 4:00a.m. to find our youth hostel, and they were still going strong at 4:00. Jared and I have had to stay a little longer here in Athens than we had thought because the airlines lost Jared's bag on the way here from [View Full Entry]

I'm sad to leave Turkey though I'm much relieved not to have to pay anymore for the privilege to use a squat toilet and then flush my business by hand with a water jug. As with all of my other trips to third world countries they always seem to give me the parting gift of serious travellers stomach upset. Janice and I both got it, and luckily I have ciprofloxin with me. We did contemplate going to get Janice her own personal antibiotics but that would require going to a hospital. Do they not have personal doctors operating out of small [View Full Entry]

Waiting for the Bus
Waiting for the Bus
We got picked up from the hotel and had to wait an hour for the bus
This morning, Aisha, Jessica, Jeanna, and I (Melissa) took a trip to Corinth, about an hour bus ride Southwest out of Athens. Our first stop was the Corinth Canal which connects the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea. The actual town of Corinth is where St Paul lived and preached around 51 AD. The remains of the city include the Agora (market place) and Apollo's Temple created around 6th Century BC. In fact it is thought the original temple was actually a Temple for Posideon but was later change to Apollo (As there is another area for Apollo worship nearby). Corinth [View Full Entry]
