Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Sifnos

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Took a seven hour ferry from Santorini to Sifnos, with a few stops at other islands along the way - now we can say we have visited 5 Greek islands! Sifnos may be my favorite part of this vacation - the island had a very sleepy Greek, non-touristy feel to it. Our hotel is very cute, on a top of a hill overlooking the capital village of Appolonia, and lots of cats hanging around (I know that the people at the hotel are sneaking them food). Thursday night we walked down to the town square for dinner - 180 steps downhill [View Full Entry]

Tasty.
What a horrible tourist trap Athens is. Actually it's not that bad. I've arrived during the Easter break so its alot quieter than I imagine it is usually, and clear, cool and sunny. I am a little stranded however, having waited a couple of nights for all the monuments to reopen, and now a couple more before I'm able to fly out on Thursday (to Munich of all places). Athenians are fleeing in droves so most flights are booked solid through the week, but not to Germany (I wonder why?). I spent a few very sad hours today loitering among the [View Full Entry]

Santorini

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini
Flight from Athens to Santorini today, and after our transfer left my suitcase at another hotel (I think that bag is cursed), we arrived at our hotel overlooking the caldera (the volcano that exploded and filled up with ocean). I have to say that all of the pictures of Santorini cannot possibly do justice to the breathtaking views of this island. Tiny white and blue houses built on the cliffs surrounding the caldera, with a sheer drop into the Aegean. Santorini is by far the most beautiful island I've ever been on. As an additional plus, since we arrived after the [View Full Entry]

I couldn't get the whole thing in the shot
We rented a car on Saturday called a Hyundai Getz!, and is considered to be mid-size. It's a little smaller than a Ford Focus. I think the only thing more challenging than trying to navigate through a strange foreign city where no one speaks English is a strange foreign city where no one speaks English and the signs are in a different alphabet altogether. By the end of Sunday I started to figure out what Athens looks like in the Greek alphabet, but other than that, we just kind of drive around until we get where we're going. Saturday night was [View Full Entry]

this square is actually within a museum so it is somewhat preserved from the past
So things are going well here in Rhodes. It's insane to think I've only been here for a handful of days. I feel like I've already experienced a ton and I haven't really left a 2 mile area yet. I will attempt to entertain you and fill you in along the way. My first night I arrived back to Mike's just in time to catch his live music. I hadn't ate so I was going to grab some food but before doing so I ran into Mike on his bike. He insisted I go back and eat with him, so indeed [View Full Entry]

Temple of Poseidon

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Today was our last day in Athens, and I think we are both ready for the islands. Since we still had the Getz!, we drove down the coast to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, which is the southernmost point of Greece. Beautiful drive along the Aegean, with a stop at a local fish market, with the fishermen docking their boats to drag their catch onto metal tables to be sold. The Greeks really seem to be sticklers for cleanliness standards. The Temple of Poseidon is magnificent, on a cliff over the Aegean. If I were the god of the ocean, [View Full Entry]

We drove through huge mountains and the weather started to turn dark and gloomy, it was raining as we tried to set up camp in a town called Meteora, then we all sat undercover and had tea and played cards with a few drinks, dreading going back to our wet tents. Morning came quickly, its quite soothing sleeping to rain on a tent. We saddled up and went high into the mountains to the old monasteries on top of cliff faces. Originally 21 monasteries that where built on top of these mountains. We were able to go into one and check [View Full Entry]

Took the Metro for the first time today - it was built for the 2004 Olympics, and is the cleanest and nicest subway I've ever been on. For .80 Euro you can go anywhere in the city, and the Metro station is about 5 blocks from our hotel. The Metro stops at the foot of the Acropolis, and it is so much higher up on the plateau over Athens than it looks in pictures. There is so much to see in the Acropolis that you need a map of the monuments or you'll forget what you're getting your picture taken in [View Full Entry]

taking pictures of yourself is strange
I staggered on to the flight to Athens from Frankfurt pretending like to my internal clock it really was 7:50pm. It was overall a funny day hanging out in the airport but as exciting as it was (or as I made it), I think it was good that my trip was leading elsewhere. The flight to Greece was (surprisingly?) the first time I encountered the Greek language on the trip. By blood, I'm exactly 50% Greek which just means that 95% of the time, people initially address me with the audio form of pie, theta, delta, beta, and psi (only those). [View Full Entry]
