Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Acropolis now!

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Hi everyone! We know that you have been waiting to see our next blog so here it is...enjoy! The riot police heard we were coming to Athens and they were ready for us! They wouldnt even let us down the road so that we could see the Acropolis! Little do they know that we are smart people and we just went on the bus a different way!!! Seeing the Acropolis and theatre of Dionysis was as amazing as we had imagined and hoped it to be. It is a great feeling to be amongst buildings that we have been looking at [View Full Entry]

We are leaving Greece. Our boat has departed. Leaving anywhere always makes me pensive, but Greece is different. I have learned so much, yet, there is so much more that I could know. Athens was wonderful. That last day was full of so much. We went to the Acropolis. Wow, a whole lot of stairs. Really the Parthenon is the main temple, and I have to admire all of the sciences, thoughts, etc… that go into it. However, I found that “The Old Temple” pulled to me more. The professors were lecturing how it was lost in the way of [View Full Entry]

Temple of Poseidon

Europe » Greece » Attica » Cape Sounion
On my last full day in Greece the options of how best to spend the few remaining hours were many and varied. Eventually I decided that I wanted to go down to Cape Sounion, 70kms south of Athens to see the Temple of Poseidon, built in 444 BC. I also thought it would be nice to pack up a picnic lunch, especially given that Christos said he didn’t understand what a Kiwi picnic was. Communicating in English with Christos…..of course the only way I was able to…. was a source of constant amusement for me. I would blabber away and after [View Full Entry]

The Temple and me
Yip, sure is a hard life...
Water boy

We began our trip to Santorini by leaving Olympia at 7am on the train. Our train took us from Olympia to Corinth then we transferred to a train to Athens. This ended up taking about six hours in total. We then went out to the docks at Piraeus to buy ferry tickets to Santorini. Our ferry was to leave at 5:30pm and we could board at four. So we hung out for a couple of hours and waited to board. I must admit the idea of taking the ferry scared me quite a bit at first (they are so unnaturally large) [View Full Entry]

So, Again, it's been a while since i've had a chance to update this blog, but I can assure you, i'm alive and well and well travelled at this point. So, where to begin. We've been doing the usual route, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Italy again...you know...it actually gets a bit boring, I can't believe I say things like...'what, we're in Livorno(Pisa/Florence) again...weren't we just here...I wish it could be Rhodes or somewhere with a beach...' This is what it's like to be spoiled when travelling too many times to the same ports over and over again. I'm getting quite excited [View Full Entry]

Olympia

 Europe » Greece » Pelopennese
The bus ride from Nafplio to Olympia was one of the most incredible and scary experiences of my life - I highly recommend it. We went from Nafplio to Tripoli and then transferred to a bus that we thought was going to take us directly to Olympia. Throughout the whole of the trip we saw some spectacular scenery. We wound our way up and down mountains on narrow roads where one side of us would be sheer cliffs going up and the other side would be drops going several hundred feet down with little clearance for the bus. We saw amazing [View Full Entry]

Annette: Like Christopher, I have been delegated to write about our Greek Odyssey with the boys. Everybody who’s anybody knows that Greece has always been like the Holy Grail to me. Finally, with Ed, Matt and Paul in tow we set out on this journey of self discovery! After a semi teary goodbye to Christopher, we set out for the train ride to Luton airport which was pretty uneventful. That all changed when we arrived and our Easyjet flight had been replaced with Air Finland. The plane looked like something left over from WWII, with broken seats and threadbare carpet! It’s past midnight, but noises of an unremitting spark in Life resound as if it were day. Yellow lights flitter on the sidewalks’ canopies streaming through to the concrete and decorative garlands strung over the traffic reach into infinity like a cosmic journey. The lines of ornamental lights pull at the city’s futuristic lever of style, traveling light-years beyond time. As Greece’s second city and home to a voluminous crowd of university students, Thessaloniki sleeps solely at the rise of dawn; it lives like a thumping jackhammer the remaining hours. The citize [View Full Entry]
