Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Entrance to the ancient temple of Apollo, facing the revered island of Delos where Apollo was born.
"A little boat fishing between Paros and Naxos is of incomprably more interest to me than a new revolution, a new fashion or a new aesthetic in Europe, a new piece of machinery in America or new form of mysticism in Asia. Peace! Peace!" ~George Theotakas This quote sums up my experience in Naxos, the largest island in the Cycladic islands of Greece. Although there is Mt. Za, the highest point in the islands where Zeus was supposed to have lived, mountain villages, remote caves, and hiking galore on the south side of the island, I rarely left my beach. Took the fast ferry - Flying Cat 4, a 1 1/2 hour ride from Santorini to Heraklion. The waters were very choppy and the catarman that cruised at some 25 knots provided for some serious excitement, as Isabel witnessed when she walked into the washroom to see some small boy vomit his dinner onto some poor girls legs and arms - need we say more. The ride was exciting although an 1 1/2 late! Upon arriving at the port, we were meet by our rental car company. After an exchange of some hard cash we were off, no credit card imprint, [View Full Entry]

Piraeus Is and Piraeus Was

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Slow roasted gyro spices and the waft of numerous cigarettes intermingle in a sea air aboard the F/B Lato. We leave a 2,800 year old port behind, our captain blowing his horn to a passing ferry less than half our size as we leave the harbor’s entrance. It’s a seaman’s greeting. The response is reciprocated. With the Great Harbor, commonly known as Piraeus, this horn echoes round the surrounding hills. In the dark, they’re illumined with stacks of geometric apartment housing whose lights twinkle as the skies above. Honestly, the harbor is much more beautifying in [View Full Entry]

Our view from Markos Hotel towards the main part of town. Somewhere in there is 'Shooters.'
As I sat at the bus stop in Santorini waiting for the metal box without brakes I met some Canadians, and believe it or not, an American (and he wasn't even from NY as they all tend to be so far. Kansas City!) So we made quick friends despite our hangovers and decided to team up for hotel hunting on Ios. A short ferry ride threatened our troubled tummies, but the "Fly Cat Four" arrived on Ios safely. (Yes we named ourselves after our ferry by the same name. We even made a logo and later brainstormed a brilliant business idea [View Full Entry]

Took a 45min ferry from Mykonos to Naxos then a 2nd ferry for 2hrs to Santorini. What can we say other than Santorini is out of this world and should be a "Must See" for everyone. No doubt this is a place for romantics and honeymooners first and foremost, but for us every day types, it's just fine thank you!! We stayed at the San Giorgio Villas (good location, extremely friendly management and cheap). For those that first lay eyes on the island of Santorini via boat, the first glance of it from a distance resembles a mountain range with snow [View Full Entry]

I snapped this one as I walked up the stairs to the restaurant where Mr. McMillan treated us.
Santorini is a postcard maker's wet dream. Everywhere you go you want to snap a new round of photos. The sunset itself attracts hundreds if not thousands of people to the town of Oia every night. Couples hold hands and sneak kisses. Families sit down to the dinner table overlooking the steep cliffs and the barnacle like houses that cling to it. I didn't know whether to watch the actual sun dropping into the ocean or to turn around and watch the canvas of white houses turn various shades of gorgeous as the light washed over them. So what does a [View Full Entry]

Tomorrow I will be flying to Greece. It has been a long year and my 9-day vacation trip to the Greek islands is well deserved.I will be arriving to Athens and directly from the airport to Piareus port to get to Mykonos which will be the first island to visit.I will be arrivng to Athens in the afternoon so probably will arrive to Mykonos sometime after midnight. Nevertheless , from what I hear and hope for, it is the night that counts there. It will the first night to party even if we were dead-tired from the long trip. It will be [View Full Entry]

Took a 5 1/2 hr ferry from Pireaus (Athens) with stops in Pyros and Tinos. Wow, the ferry was complete choas, we've never seen anything like it before. Having spent 23 yrs on an island I have put my time in on ferries to feel confident that I can comment on when a ferry is busy, overcrowded and just chaotic. We had a reservation which guaranteed us seats and was worth every dime. People and luggage were displaced everywhere, so much so that all the hallways were unwalkable and the outer decks - don't even try going out there, not even [View Full Entry]

I dont know what more to say than the title since thats pretty much all we have done since we got here in Mykonos. There really isnt that much to do anyway but I dont really mind cause I've needed some beach time. And I must admit the sight of topless women everywhere really isnt so bad of a thing. I think by the smile on Bree's face he quite agrees with me!!!! We did head into town last night which we are a little ways away from. But it was quite the town and yes Amanda it is impossible to [View Full Entry]
