Greece Location

6/29-7/3 After a lovely stay in Crete we were told that Santorini is a must see. We were fortunate enough to time it right and meet up with our friends Jay and Stephanie who were vacationing there. After checking out there posh accomodations we found a cheaper version with less amenities (but an incredible view) next door and pretended we were guests at their fancier hotel while sitting poolside. A tad embarrassing but all in the spirit of backpacking. Santorini has such amazing natural beauty formed from volcanic rock. We had a great time exploring the dormant and active volcanos. Greece doesn't seem to have the same pit stop requirements for bus drivers that Italy has, but after a few hours Niko did pull over at a nice roadside service station/restaurant. Little Billy and Bob... [more]
It looks like the Greeks know a little something about breakfast. I was one of the first to go down for breakfast this morning. I got up a little earlier than our 7:30 wake-up call because I planned on being at Lidl at 8:00 when they opened. We were expected on the bus at 8:00. Our hotel breakfast had the usual cereals, milk and fruit, but today we had real orange juice, yoghurt, rolls and cold cuts. Best of all, there were hard-boiled eggs. Being one of the first at breakfast I was able to enjoy two eggs and two rolls [View Full Entry]

So.... I don't know why everyone says Athens is dirty or ugly or there is nothing to do and no one talks english blah blah blah. Not true at all!! Athens is much cleaner than Rome or Spain and beautiful as well. The shopping is amazing and the people here (unlike in Rome) are sooo nice and helpful and they DO speak english! Basically, I am molving here asap, so all of you will have a great place to visit :) We arrived late and met these 3 American guys on the plane and they are living here for the summer [View Full Entry]

Day Nine (Sunday)

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Kalampaka
Arrival in Igoumenitsa, Greece
Arrival in Igoumenitsa, Greece
Getting off the ship took a long time but once we were off we quickly boarded our new bus then started our drive to the Meteora district.
Despite having a few too many glasses of Italy's cheapest and despite laying in a narrow bunkbed with another bed just inches over my head, my first time ever sleeping on a ship was quite restful. Getting up and using the toilet in the middle of the night was an adventure as the ship was bucking and rolling quite a bit. But there was plenty of hot water in the shower and nice clean towels when I performed my morning ablutions. People who have been on numerous cruises told me that on these big modern ships you hardly know you're at [View Full Entry]

Winding our way through the Pindus Mountains
And even higher into the mountains
On the Thessaly Plain

So we actually are in Paradise today! Paradise beach! This place is really nice, and we just moved into our new campground this morning. It was great, we checked out and Dan vespa'ed all of our luggage over to the new campground (with a huge smile on his face because FINALLY he could go the speed that I wouldn't let him go yesterday). Then we walked along the cliffs connecting the beaches to geth back. It was a beautiful morning. Our cabin is so much nicer in comparison to the other one. There is a breeze, the beds are comfy, its [View Full Entry]

Can you believe how blue the water is??
Okay, I know we promised no more London stuff, the day we headed out was so fun that it's necessary to comment on. We spent the morning organizing ourselves and were a bit delayed when I "temporarily" lost my wallet, but hey, I'm always "temporarily" losing stuff, right? The plan was to head into the city, leave our bags at a left luggage drop off and explore until we were supposed to meet up with some camp friends, however, as we reached the top of the Earl's Court Tube station, Frazer Shanks and Alex Ehgartner were waiting at the top. They [View Full Entry]

Hello all from the people in the shitty camping.... Well it is the big man for tonight doing the blog and so here I go. As Robyn was saying yesterday, our campground is defently not what we were expecting. In fact it is a pice of crap and we really don't want to be there at all........ The cabins are hot, with out the wind blowing through them at all, and dirty. Last night we decided to to the time honored solution to the problem and get drunk off cheap wine, out of tetra packs no less. It worked wonderfuly well [View Full Entry]

Hello to one and all, It is day two of our Mykonos excursion, and the place is still beautiful. I just have to get a little rant out of the way first. I'm sad to report that our campground is NOTHING like the amazing ones in Italy, not in the slightest. We are paying 40 euros a night for a dirty, shitty beach cabin with no A/C, its a little brutal. However it is on a cliff right near the beach, so that is really nice. I just beg to ask the question, would you prefer a view or a good [View Full Entry]

Ladies and gentlemen, the wine here is so good. I'm in love. I am especially fond of the house white wines, I havn't had a bad one yet! My new favourite meal is a big Gyro pita with lots of tzatiki (sp) sauce and a half litre of wine. Ohhhh it makes me all happy inside and out. Its crazy cause a glass of the house white is normally like 1-2 euros, but you can get a half litre of the house white for like 3-5 euros... So that begs the question stated in my title. Why have one glass when [View Full Entry]

6/16 - 6/29 We left Mykonos and took a 4 hour speedferry, followed by a 3 hour bus ride to visit my sisters town of Chania, Crete. I have had the good fortune of getting to visit my two sisters in their beautiful beach laden island every few years, but I was most excited to bring Jaime, and have her spend time with my family in Greece. One of my sisters, Tara, was kind enough to move her family over to her mother-in-laws house a few blocks away, and give Jaime and I their apartment for our use. Moving out in [View Full Entry]
