Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

We pass botiques with fanciful names like "Extreme Wear" and "Water City", which seem ridiculous, as there is nothing extreme or wet about them. Dive Shops and Internet Cafes have papered over their windows. Freddy's Bar and Apollo Rent A Car have been deserted for months. They only activity inside of these former businesses is the annual winter overhaul and repair work crawling along. Only those businesses necessary to the locals survival are still open: Cava Mini Market and the all-inclusive Assos International Kiosk that sells everything from milk and beer to stamps and candy. It's difficult to keep track of everything that's I'm experiencing! But, I'm going to try my best. At the present moment, I'm sitting in the living room of our flat. I've just been brainstorming the different kinds of dishes I know how to cook and what ingredients I'll need to buy. It's sad how few recipes I know off the top of my head. I guess that's one of the reasons I like to cook more than bake, recipes are less important that way. Speaking of food though, we went to the laiki today on Theophilou street. It's a huge (huge!) Hospitals and Stadiums

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
So, I'm here in Pangrati, a lovely, grimy little neighborhood in Athens. That's where everyone in the Arcadia Program and I live. I've been up since 6:45. Surprisingly, I slept pretty much the whole night through, even though I'm pretty jet-lagged. Right now, the jet-lag isn't feeling so bad, but when I wake up at 4 AM tomorrow and have trouble falling asleep, then I'll be unhappy. I had to go to Agia Eleni hospital today for a routine chest X-ray in order to apply for my residence permit. It was a long hassle, tons of paperwork and red tape. I [View Full Entry]

It's a pretty strange feeling to be here after all this time and anticipation. Honestly, it's a bit surreal still. On the drive from the airport to the city, I looked at the shrubby, red-dirt hills and it was more beautiful that I would have expected. The weather has been perfect. The travel was as smooth as possible. And I love my aparment at Odos Iofontos 1. There are 5 of us, 3 girls and 2 of us boys and 4 bedrooms. Figuring that it was the easiest divide to make, we took the double. I'm a big fan of my [View Full Entry]

Our sweet pad
Travelling through Europe during winter season certainly has it's disadvantages. eg-no scuba diving other than in the bathtub. But I am about to fill you in on what they don't tell you in the travel books...that is winter is a splendid time for travel!! We arrived in Chania (pronounced Hania) close to a week ago. Chania is a small half old, half new quiet town that lies on the northwest corner of Crete. The dos hermanos y un amiga arrived in the center of Chania by bus at roughly 6AM after the nightlong boat ride from Athens. We checked our map...well [View Full Entry]

It was her shoes that I noticed first. Resting in a pile on the wooden hostel floor, my eyes were immediately drawn to their uniqueness. Tattered from years of wear, dusty brown leather with stretched cross-straps barely clinging to the sole. Once I finally met the owner of these shoes, I realized that she could be epitomized in her shoes. She was reading quietly in the corner and glanced furtively toward our game every few pages. She was a frazzled-looking, grandmotherly figure reading a book in German. I learned that her name was Rosemary and she was a lot tougher [View Full Entry]

Our new friend V!

We began Adams birthday in a fashionable bar down the street from our hotel in Athens. We wandered in and found seats amongst the low-lit modern lamps and tasteful decor. Looking around, I realized I was about the only female in the bar. The rest of the couches and barstools were filled with pairs or trios of men. Even the bartenders were male. We had a good time playing cards and laughing that the Greek term "day bar" is the equivalent of our term for gay bar. The next day we spent in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, where [View Full Entry]

Welcome Elliott! Adam's younger brother has joined us for Greece. He arrived wide-eyed and curious about everything: wandering the streets of Venice, he stopped in every single store. We have enjoyed having a third opponent in Scrabble and an additional friend on the trip. After picking him up in Venice, we traveled to Athens, Greece, where we will soak up the sun for an indefinite amount of time. We have much to attribute to the Greeks: The Olympic games, theatre, philosophy, tales like the Odyssey and the Illiad, and of course democracy. It is thrilling to be in a place [View Full Entry]

Athens!

(Mark here) Well we're in Athens and are heading home tomorrow night after one more day in the city. We arrived here on Monday afternoon and have seen a lot of great places in the past few days. Unfortunately we've been unable to reach the travelblog site for the past few days, and now we're able to reach it, we have no way of uploading pictures on this computer! We'll get online once we arrive back stateside and put pictures up then. Until then, we are off to enjoy some Ouzo with some friends who are heading home in the wee [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone: We're actually back home in the U.S. now (it's January 14th), but we didn't have access to the travelblog for days. So, we're creating a few more days of blogposts and adding pictures to our previous posts. Check 'em out! January 7th was our final day in Kalavrita. We overslept and missed the bus trip to the ski lodge, so we had breakfast in town and then walked to areas we had not yet visited. We should give you a little history about Kalavrita, as it will help to explain the places we visited today. Kalavrita is officially 2001 [View Full Entry]
