Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

After catching a train to Rome airport and checking our baggage, Hendo and I had plenty of time to look around the shops including duty free. We didn’t buy anything however and boarded our flight to Sofia. The flight there only took an hour and 40 mins and when we got there we had to check in to Bulgaria immigration but checked out about half hour later when we took our connecting flight to Athens. The second flight took an hour 15 but when we got to Athens it took another hour and a half on public transport to get to [View Full Entry]

So next we hit Florence after taking an overnight train from Vienna. The train was pretty interesting with the seats (sort of like hard couches) acting as the beds and six people per bunk room. You got a sheet and a shitty little pillow to sleep with but it was well worth the experience! Hendo, being very hung over tried to sleep the whole time but I made him stay up for a game of cards! We both got a little bit of sleep before our wake up knock at 5:45am! Had some crappy train breakfast then arrived in Florence at [View Full Entry]

Travelling hell Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Paros
Not joking. I'm firing myself as our travel agent. Got up at 3am. Took a taxi to the Lisboa airport, a plane to Munich, a plane to Athens, a rushed taxi ride to Piraeus, a 5-hour ferry ride in economy to Paros, waited an hour for a bus to Punda because it was too windy for the normal passenger ferry, which then took us to the car ferry to Antiparos. We arrived after Midnight, trying to find our hotel (it was one we'd not stayed at before). In bed by 1am. There are no pictures from this day. (I have to [View Full Entry]

Rickelle is napping, so you're stuck with James today! Sunday in Athens! This morning we rolled out of our hotel for another busy day in the historical areas around the Acropolis. As we exited the Metro in the Thissio district, we were greeted by two aural overtones to the natural hum of the city. The tolling of bells from numerous churches slowly gave way to the steady shurrruping of the cicadas as we traveled from the city streets into the wooded hills. Our first stop was the 6th century BC graveyard known as Karamikos, which has survived relatively intact through the [View Full Entry]

I started my latest European sojourn with a trip to the ancient city of Olympia. Although most of it is in ruins, if you consider how long its been around it is remarkably well preserved. The first stadium is really quite remarkable. A depression in the ground, surrounded by grassy hills on 3 sides is quite an ideal natural setting to watch sports. All modern stadiums are modeled after this one. The podium where the Olympic torch is lit every four years is also in Olympia. Following my trip to Olympia, I set off for the island of Zakynthos with my [View Full Entry]

Sunrise at the Acropolis Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
We had read that to really experience the awe of the Acropolis and the Parthenon you should arrive before 9 am when the hordes of tourists would take over the ruins and the mystery would be lost as just one more tourist attraction. Not one to miss a magical moment, I dragged Jimmy out of our hotel and onto the subway so that we would be able to indulge in the ancient aura before the crowds arrived. The streets were quiet. The sun had just risen over the Acropolis. There were just a few locals out as Athens was slowly waking [View Full Entry]

Maya learned about Greece this year in school. So on our home trip, we decided to go Greece . On the way stopped by Heidelberg to see Jason and his family and then went to Greece. We had told our travel agent in India that we would like to see the Parthenon and go to an island that was not very touristy. So we went to Athens and she suggested we go to Tinos island. Tinos, a small island in the Aegean sea was just perfect. We highly recommend it. It is just beautiful, blue and white like the colors of [View Full Entry]

Good Night Greece Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Our day has lasted about 36 hours. After lunch in New York City, breakfast in London, and dinner in Athens, Jimmy finally feels like a world traveler. In New York, we locked up our luggage at the airport and spent a few hours roaming around Manhattan. We went to the Titanic exhibition just off of 44th between 7th & 8th Avenues. It was bittersweet. Upon entering the museum, you are given boarding passes representing passengers on the voyage. When you exit, you check your boarding pass against the list of survivors. My passenger lived. Jimmy's died. But what can you expect [View Full Entry]
