Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Travelmates for a month!
I'm writing from Roma (Rome)! On Saturday, my travel girls and I left our island resort on Rhodes, which was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the Greek-ness of it all. Athens, on the other hand, has the cool ancient ruins and Acropolis, but is a noisy, dirty city where I didn't feel very safe. Thank God we're now in beautiful Roma, with the Colosseum just down the street and pizzerias and gelato (ice cream) stands on every corner... (Each day is compiled from the handwritten diary I'm keeping.) Sunday, March 25 Twenty-four hours ago (including losing 3 hours due to [View Full Entry]

Since Crete was the main focus of my trip to lovely Greece, it's only fitting that Crete be the place I stretch my legs and find the pulse of this country of my ancestors. Chania It all went down in a place called Chania; we didn't spend every day there, but it was our homebase and the place where we got to be lazy. Chania is an old, old town. Inhabited by ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, and Turks, it was also the capitol of the short-lived independent nation of Crete. Now it's a tourist place, open to anyone [View Full Entry]

The blazing beams of the sun shine across vast space and a crystal blue sky, bathing me in heat and light while wave after wave of cooled air molecules roll in from the Mediterranean, smash across my side, and tangle with my blowing hair. I'm standing on an Athens rooftop in the early morning, breathing and meditating after some long Hatha Yoga practice while the sweat dries on the Kenyan cloth Leso I've been using as a mat. I think about God's perspective: the simultaneous viewpoint of every particle, molecule, and complex structure in the universe. I think about the emptiness [View Full Entry]

"From Sydney to the acropolis....is 30 hours by foot and wings" I started my journey in top spirits and continued this mood despite the exausting flights that got me to my destination. All that free time did give me a chance to watch borat a few more times. I had the window seat and it seemed my prayers for a couple of sexy co-eds in the seats next to me had been ignored and replaced with two middle age brits. There was an amazing lightning storm as we passed over indonesia, and i tried to ignore the possible danger it meant [View Full Entry]

There are about a hundred Greek islands inhabited all over the year. On the biggest one - Crete - live more than half a million Greeks. On Pserimos, one of the smallest, their number is just around 130 in summer and only 20 in winter time. You reach that island by a small, regular passenger ferry boat lnamed >Maniai<, leaving the nearby Kalymnos island at about 9:30 a.m.: the journey takes just one hour. It goes back to Kalymnos at about 4 p.m. The small ferry is too big for the quay of Pserimos. So passengers have to jump ashore. On [View Full Entry]

March 13th (Athens)

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Tuesday was our last day in Greece. We decided to sleep in late since we only had one more thing to visit, Greece’s most well-known attraction, the Parthenon and the Acropolis. Unfortunately, the day started off cloudy and the sun only peaked through a couple times, so most of my Parthenon pictures came out dull and dark. We left around 11:00 to walk to the Acropolis. Once there, we climbed the snaking path that leads up the rock that the Parthenon and other ancient Greek temples are built upon. The Acropolis is the name of the whole complex, hill and all. After a somewhat fitful sleep on the collapsable shipseats on the fery from Milos, i was happy when we docked at 9 in the morning in Crete. The sun shone and Agios Nicholaos spread out (and up!) before me. I walked around the harbour and over a small pedestrian bridge to where the town began. Without a definate schedule yet i thought i would just get a feel for Agios Nicholaos and decide if i wanted to stay or move on. As I stood on a corner looking around I overheard a woman giving directions very loudly. I looked across [View Full Entry]

March 12th (Athens)

As usual, Brad and I got up and got breakfast downstairs. Today was a big day…our goal was to get to one of the Greek islands. We had no idea how or which one we would go to, so the initial plan was to take the Metro down to Piraeus and then see what happens from there. We took the train there and walked down to the harbor looking for a ferry ticket office. But since we had no idea what island we wanted to go to, that was a problem. So, we walked into a bookstore that was near the [View Full Entry]

Old City Walls
Old City Walls
A view of the extensive city walls in Thessaloniki which still remain. People live on both sides now.
So, Thessaloniki is my new favorite city in Greece, in other words it’s the only place I can imagine myself living for a good long time at some point in my life. We left on Thursday night from stathmos larissas in Athens and took the express train to Thessaloniki. It took about 4.5 hours, which wasn’t so bad. I’ll be honest, the train ride there wasn’t as comfortable as Amtrak, but it was a lot better than a bus. And, being that It was a class field trip, I didn’t have to pay for it, which makes it even nicer.. We [View Full Entry]
