Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001. To be updated

Saturday, March 31 A sleepless night followed by a long, boring day = not much to write about. There was a storm, with pouring rain and howling wind, during the night. I got up at one point to see the palm trees thrashing back and forth, just like you see on TV for hurricanes. Scary! We chowed down on the last of our cereal and milk and ended up sitting in the lobby for the rest of the afternoon with our luggage, since our flight didn't leave until late that evening. Played cards... read books... ate lunch from the grocery store... [View Full Entry]

The Islands

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
An early morning ferry and no alarm clock meant i had to call on the "shake me 'till i'm awake" services of the athens backpackers staff. I was shaken at 5:30am and caught the ferry to Syros. I had found a cheap camping ground on the internet in the town of Galissas on the western side of the island. I ignored the spruikers waiting at the port and caught the bus to the other side of Syros. I found someone who spoke english and asked for directions to the camping ground. She informed me everything in the town was closed [View Full Entry]

Hi Again Everyone, Thought I would get in another entry as I'm not sure what it is going to be like getting access to computer once I leave Greece -- and I know there will not be any once I leave Kathmandhu and am up in the Himilayas! Really enjoying trip -- seeing lots of interesting things and getting lots of pictures and video -- will try to upload some photos at some point... Getting ready to leave for airport -- flying first to Kingdom of Bahrain in Saudi Arabia, and then on to Nepal... Athens is a large city with [View Full Entry]

Not sure what day it is...

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Hi everyone, I think it's Wed morning here -- and still Tues nite back home... There is a 10 hour time difference between Pacific time and here in Athens... Had very nice flights Monday from Abbotsford to Calgary (I have never noticed before just quite how amazing the mountains are around where we live, but I guess I'm a little more aware given my destination) and Calgary to Montreal... aisle seats with no one beside me! Montreal was a bit cool and rainy but I got to walk around a bit downtown that night, and next day went to the old [View Full Entry]

Our single day in Athens

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
Chapter four contains the climax and conclusion of the journey. We flew into Athens at 7 in the morning and had flights out at 4 the next morning so instead of getting a hotel or hostel, we decided to save money and hang out in Athens/ the airport and left our backpacks in lockers at Athens International. We took a taxi into the city because as long as you split them four ways, taxis are actually cheaper than everyone buying individual metro tickets. The first thing we decided we needed was coffee and food, and low and behold when we [View Full Entry]

Overnight Bus Tales Why do we keep on doing this? Maybe because the cheapest way to get from Istanbul to Athens was by, you guessed it, an overnight bus! We left Istanbul at 10am in a very nice coach complete with two Greek drivers this time. We had been allocated the four front seats which we thought was great for watching the scenery but unfortunately it also gave us a view of how the drivers drove the bus!! We watched with a mixture of fascination and horror as our drivers drank coffee, spoke on hand-held mobile phones, looked for CDs and [View Full Entry]

Different Worlds

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
I'm writing this entry just a few hours before I get onto an airplane for that last stretch of travel which ends my trip. I'm in Greece and I've had an amazing day with my parents and some long-lost, newly-discovered cousins. I'm painfully missing Chelly and we'll have thousands more miles between us soon. In short, there is a lot going on inside me as I write this last live blog from the road. The trip to Greece was very different than any of the other country-visits I've had in the last six months. It was a family trip--for one [View Full Entry]

The taxi driver let us out just as the sun was rising.
Yes, I spent my Spring Break this year in the beautiful Greek Isles. I went with Josh, Miles and Jess. We spent three days on the Island of Kos and almost one full day in Athens. Where to start... well, we decided to book the cheapest tickets we could find on Aegean Air, thus we ended up in Kos, an island we knew nothing about except that Hippocrates, the inventor of modern medicine, was from there. We ended up flying out of Prague around midnight via Athens and arrived in the middle of Kos island at about 5 AM. We [View Full Entry]

its just the roof of the next building over, but it certainly does look like a pyramid and evenso when you see the building it sits upon
today i thought of so many clever ways to begin this entry as i walked around Methoni.... of course they all now evade me. i am sitting in a funny little loft of a cafe/bar in the corner at one of three computer terminals.... young kids smoke and joke and flirt on the other side..... i am going to try to simultaneously blog the present as well as my past 3 weeks in Greece. (different entries though, so i hope, you can make sense of it) Methoni is a smallish town on the westernmost peninsula of South Greece. Waking up [View Full Entry]
