Well, it's our last day in Corfu and we are sad to leave... Bella Vista, the place where we are staying, was totally awesome. The people were so friendly and the beach was incredible, not to mention the great tasting food!!
We spent yesterday exploring the northern part of Corfu in a place called Sidari. It has a very special location called the Canal d'Amour, which is a really cool rock formation that has eroded away from the tide. We took lots of pictures so you will be able to see it soon. We are just killing time before we catch our next ferry, maybe we will have time to upload pictures later. Anyways, we really like the canal, but the rest of Sidari beach was a dump compared to the beach we have been enjoying by our hostel. It smelled kind of funky... reminded us of the beaches we have in Canada. We sort of expected to see Canada geese there... And there were TONS of British people everywhere. I guess they prefer the north part of the island where all the resorts are.
We had to spend about four hours in Sidari because the buses only run at certain times, and then when we got back to Corfu town we had to wait another couple hours because we couldn't get a bus back to Pelekas, the small town where we are staying. We ended up getting some souvlaki in pitas- the second time we have had this meal and holy crap is it ever good!! Basically they take a pita and they douse it in tsatziki sauce, then they put onions and tomatoes and chicken souvalki... and here is the best part. They stuff it with french fries and pour gravy in the top. SOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!
We had a great time eating it, you are supposed to eat the fries first and dip them into the gravy. It's like the Greek version of the hamburger and fries, all in one. We fed some to the pigeons too, they seemed to like it. There are a lot of pigeons here...
After our snack we waited at the bus stop (a place we have spent lots of time here in Corfu..). Right beside the bus stop is a small street where they were doing some construction, it seems they were trying to replace a water main. Well, the workers didn't really know what they were doing and they ended up breaking a pipe and there was water shooting everywhere. It was pretty funny. There were men yelling at each other and lots of guys just standing around watching. We chilled at the bus stop and watched all the action till our bus came.
Then we went back to our hostel and enjoyed some tasty greek salad and pasta. The woman running the place, Sophia, is great. She is such a busy little lady always running all over the place but she always stops to ask how your sleep was, and she is very helpful. She arranged for us to get driven into town today because we had our big bags with us (they drive people around in a mini mercedes benz bus... pretty sweet).
Anyways, at the end of the night we had to pack all our stuff up to get ready to leave the next day. In the morning we took one look outside and were totally bummed because it was cloudy and grey and the water was full of white caps. We didn't think we would be able to go outside all day. That's the Canadian in us... Turns out the weather was gorgeous and we were able to spend the day at the beach. The sky cleared up by about 10:00 and it really doesn't start cooling off here till about 7:00pm. Even when we left the hostel at about 6:00pm there were still people lounging on the beach. When we were there, the waves were absolutely huge and Sean tested out his body surfing skills.
Later on when we were back up in the hostel having something to eat we saw a hang glider land right on the beach. We also met a couple from Canada, and another from England. We chatted with a few of the people at the hostel about their travels in Europe before we headed off to Corfu town, where we are now, to catch our ferry tonight.
We booked a night ferry again (we cant bear to waste precious daytime hours on a boat). We are headed from Corfu to Patras tonight, we leave at 9:30pm and should arrive in Patras around 6:00am. From there we simply catch a bus down to Killini, which we have been told is only about an hour. Then we catch a really short boat ride from Killini to Zakynthos, where we will spend the next three nights! We emailed them to let them know that we would be arriving a day early, and they said it wouldn't be a problem. We decided to cut out our visit to Meteora, we are sick of travel time! We just want to relax on the beach and spend as much time enjoying ourselves as possible.
We are both really excited for Zakynthos- this is the island with Shipwreck Beach! Basically a tiny little beach with and old ship wreck sticking right out of the sand in the middle of the beach. Hopefully we'll get some more great pictures!
We've got to go catch our ferry now. Miss you all lots and want to tell the moms HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!! We're thinking of you.
Love,
Jess and Sean
