Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

okay, just kidding, I just liked this boat we saw on our way to the island.
This is a short photo essay of Delos, the ancient religious center of Greece. It was the birthplace of Apollo, the island in which the gate of Naxos faces. It became rich with trade and a huge population of 30,000 people is estimated to have lived on this tiny island, now unpopulated except for the lizards. I just made a short 2 hour trip. In that time I saw a LOT of old white marble which is pretty much what I'm sharing with you. For any travellers reading this, I would recommend going. It's a nice side trip from Mykonos and [View Full Entry]

So arrival in Alexandropoulis was abrupt, me and Rach stopped at one of the many 24hr cake shops (yes wierd for a town with a pop of ~70k) managed to find a cheap hotel that would give us a half rate for the day if we were out by 3pm and caught a few extra hours sleep. We left at about 12 and i managed to catch the end of the Greece vs USA basketball game, Greece won and within seconds the streets were filled with people with flags, drums and anything that could make noise, was quite unexpected and very [View Full Entry]

Tomorrow I will be flying to Greece. It has been a long year and my 9-day vacation trip to the Greek islands is well deserved.I will be arriving to Athens and directly from the airport to Piareus port to get to Mykonos which will be the first island to visit.I will be arrivng to Athens in the afternoon so probably will arrive to Mykonos sometime after midnight. Nevertheless , from what I hear and hope for, it is the night that counts there. It will the first night to party even if we were dead-tired from the long trip. It will be [View Full Entry]

After the other boys decided to spend a week or so in Tunisia on the beach on the North coast of Africa, Luke and I were faced with a decision as neither of us were interested in that trip and had both heard fairly average reports of the country. Steve had his heart set on the Ukraine which, again, Luke and I weren't particularly interested in, so in around 45 minutes we looked at the map of Europe, checked flight prices to a few destinations and were booked onto a flight to Greece with the plan to see Athens then spend [View Full Entry]

Epidavros
This is a beautiful place with everthing you need to do nothing but the basics.
Saturday 12 August Michele, Alexios and Katerina, Maz and I took a taxi to Epidavros, a seaside town 120 km south along the coast from Piraus. Here we have no car and there is nowhere to walk other than the beaches each side of town. We're staying at the Soronis Hotel in the centre of town and only 50 metres or so from the water. The hotel is newly renovated, very comfortable, and the owner / manager is a wonderful host. Around the corner is a cafe/ restaurant which advertises "Internet". They have one PC for the use of the owner [View Full Entry]

Well I am finally done and dusted with Greece so I thought I would compile a Top 10 list. Here it goes (once again in no order): 1. Partying it up every night in Ios 2. The beach parties at Far out camping every day 3. Meeting up with Peter in Athens and staying with his lovely family 4. Visiting the volcanic ruins in Santorini 5. Our giant cocktails in Santorini 6. Visiting the Acropolis in Athens 7. Chilling out at the Far Out Village every day and working on our tan in Ios 8. Seeing the sunset in Io in [View Full Entry]

hello all! --- warning-- this ones a long one!-- everything is going great with our euro trip. the greek islands were definitly a highlight for the both of us. After going to travel agents and talking to many locals we decided on going to two different islands. We wanted one that wasnt so touristy with gorgeous beaches and landscape and the other would be your typical greek island party get away. We left Athens on the 18th of July on a ferry to go to an island called KOUFONISSI. this island is literally a speck on the map and MANY people [View Full Entry]

Mykonos

I am at a beach in Karpathos Greece. Sitting on my rented beach chair, with my calloused feet hanging over the side. The tiny gold pebbles chip away at the poor paint job on my toes- an attempt to cover up six months of travel dust. Overhead hangs a blue sky, exactly the type you would imagine present in Greece, and in front of me the Aegean waves rejoice that they have met their destiny ashore. Griff says something about being in a Corona commercial and I laugh lamely, as all of my strength- even to speak- has been pulled [View Full Entry]
