Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Approaching Sifnos port
Sifnos Europe » Greece By Di551 June 27th 2007 Sifnos: I had read so much on this island and was so looking forward to this one out of all the islands. But just as we arrived, we faced 43 degree plus heat. We stayed nine nights at Simeon rooms right on the Kamares Harbour. We had great views of all the port activity. I just love watching the big speed jets dock and hundreds of people disembark along with cars, semi trailers etc.. On any day, ther [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone. So the heat wave continues. Yesterday we stoppeed working at 1:30 instead of 2:30 because the temperature was up to 45 in the shade. Yep it's brutally hot here. But we're all being careful, drinking lots, we have sun shades over our trenches and the sun screen is always out. Today we were working and again it was very hot, but not as hot. Probably only 39... Anyways after karpouzie (watermelon break) Aleydis our boss came up to me and told me to go put on a shirt because I have such fair skin and red hair. aparently she's [View Full Entry]

Hello!!! So at the moment we are in a heat wave in Greece. Yikes! It has been well over 40 degrees for the last week or more. And it is rediculously hot. Athens was almost unberable. We were lucky though that our hotel had AC, except it just made stepping out into the heat that much worse. On sunday in athens we got up and headed our at 8:30 for the acropolis. So off we went, hiked up the huge hill only to find out that the guards were striking. and we heard that it was the first time in 20 [View Full Entry]

tragana

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
Hello again, it looks like i'm only going to be able to update this on weekends when we go into larger cities because the internet access we have in tragana is very slow and gets expensive....so keep looking out for weekend updates! So week two has gone by rediculously fast. Monday we opened up the trenches, took off the tarps and began to sweep up the site and get it ready for begining of season photographs. So lots of sweeping with tiny brooms....pretty mindless. Our field dierctor had also been discussing with one of the land owners on the island if [View Full Entry]

my first week

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
Hello everyone! Firstly, thank you for all your comments, it is so nice to hear from you guys. I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. Greece is amazingly beautiful and so far most of the people here seem very cool and like it will be a great summer. After my messy travel day to athens and then monday's adventure on the Greek bus to tragana I settled into our house that has 7 girls and one bathroom. It's a little tight but we're making it work. Three of us are living in the kitchen and there is a [View Full Entry]

Day Twelve

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
Hello all...it's our last day here. We had great plans to get up and go to Red Beach and then to White Beach, but we are so sore and tired from yesterday that we could not muster up the energy to hop on buses again and head out. Plus being our last day to relax for awhile was inticing, especially for Aubri! We have read many books or I should say Aubri has - she is fast! I am reading Mauve Binchys - Quentins and Aub is reading The Wedding Officer. Anyway, we have just been taking a walk here and [View Full Entry]

Caught Up on Sleep

 Europe » Greece » Thessaly » Meteora
Today I slept in late. I think I am on European time now. We walked through the small town of Katakolon, Greece. It had GREAT shops. I loved the swords. I didn't get one though. :( I played ping pong with my dad and I beat him! YES! BINGO was fun, we didn't win, but we will try again. I did win a beach bag and water bottle. They called me up and then danced with me! UGH! We went to "Who Wants to be a Bizallionare" game show and to the comedy show. Tomorrow we head to Corfu, Greece. We [View Full Entry]

Now they have roads and stairs . . . it used to be you'd be hauled up the side of the rock in netting. Screw bungee jumping . . . let me do that!!!
. . . yes, the black cloud has decided to follow me on this trip!! I think the gods are trying to send me a message. I'm not even going to check to see what the weather is like in England, but I'm sure it's nice and sunny. Although we've had some rain here in Greece, it's still been very warm, around 25 degrees . . . but my pasty white skin is begging for some colour!! Things I've learned in five days and have easily adapted to: - afternoon naps are not an oddity; they are practically law! Everything [View Full Entry]
