Hello everyone, and happy new year! Mark and Lynne are off to their next adventure in Greece. We will be staying in Kalavrita and various cities in the Peloponesse region, and also will have several days in Athens. We're not sure when we'll have access to a computer for our first week of the 12-day trip, but we'll make sure to get you up to speed on our travels whenever we find internet access. Our flight today will take us to a short stopover in Amsterdam, and then we head to Athens. We will be brought to Kalavrita for the start of our festival. We're not exactly sure where we'll be and what we'll be doing in our first few days, but we're sure it will be fun. ... read more

It was a bit of a shock, landing in a country where the only place I know any letters of the alphabet from is from math class! To my luck, however, many Greek people speak very good English and most of the signs are also written in the 'normal' alphabet. I spent 3 days in Greece, where I couch surfed with a very cool, un-greek greek, named Kostas. The highlights of Athens were the Acropolis, the Olympic Stadium (from the first modern-day Olympics), and the National Guards in their funky suits with their funky little dance when they perform the changing of the guards. After Athens, I took the ferry over to the island of Aegina. I stayed in the small village of Aegina marina, which is all but deserted this time of year. For one ... read more

I lost a large part of my pictures for this update quite unfortunately, but I manage to salvage some. Marc-Andre and I took the train to Kalampaka from Athens, the village close to the famous monasteries on pillars of Meteora early in the morning. It was an easy and painless 4 to 5 hours riding during which we saw some beautiful mountains and greek countryside scenery. We talked for most of the way about travel and history (Marc-Andre is a archeology major) and broke the monotony by eating some delicious sandwhiches (his was, I'm sure) we had lovingly prepared in the morning. After a bit of searching in the village, we got a heated guesthouse (it was shockingly cold up here) for a price that made me want to leave Greece as soon as possible. After ... read more

We are leaving Greece. Our boat has departed. Leaving anywhere always makes me pensive, but Greece is different. I have learned so much, yet, there is so much more that I could know. Athens was wonderful. That last day was full of so much. We went to the Acropolis. Wow, a whole lot of stairs. Really the Parthenon is the main temple, and I have to admire all of the sciences, thoughts, etc… that go into it. However, I found that “The Old Temple” pulled to me more. The professors were lecturing how it was lost in the way of the Parthenon. Where the Parthenon is dedicated to Athena alone, the other collects the other gods together in the same building, sort of a hodgepodge of divine alters. The Parthenon is perfectly proportional and fits ... read more

From modern to ancient, Greece is superb, for the most part. I don’t know if it is because I’m traveling with the professors, but the Greek people as a whole seem so much nicer. We travel together at night and have so far had at least one guy with us, so we are safe mom. This morning we got to sleep in 30 more minutes, but sleeping with roommates means that you get up when they do, well at least if you are a light sleeper like me. So I was up at 7. It is a Sunday, but it just doesn’t feel that way at all! We had breakfast on the roof of the hotel, and it has the most wonderful view of the Acropolis. We traveled to the Agora. It was kind of hard ... read more

Oh, Fr. Goering is so awesome. I have never known a priest like him. He tells the worst jokes, but you have to laugh cause, well he’s a priest and it is so shocking as to some of the things that come out of his mouth. Last night was pretty good. When we stopped to eat (calamari) we were able to go down to the water front. It was so clear. However, the water in Itea wasn’t so muh. Both were rock beaches, and not at all what I expected. The picture of white sand beaches and clear water can be called to mind. We went to church last night, but we had to have it at another hotel. Dr. Hatlie told us it was close by and like a 10 minute walk, ha, not ... read more

I am on a boat!!! And it happens to be sailing to Greece!!! So this is the beginning, not bad at all (I’m not even sick!). I got up this morning at 5:15 to catch the sunrise, which didn’t happen until 7ish. All the same it was a wonderful experience. It is so strange, such a change from being on land or in air. The boat constantly is shaking and the wind, well it is blowing. I’m hanging on to my scarf for dear life. Besides the fact that it is mom’s, it is also my only coat/jacket. I’m thinking of this trip as a trial run for packing for 10 day. All around me are islands that have taken such a large part in the history that I have been studying!!! Once again I ... read more

Mycanae After a huge Boat, Train, Bus, Cab, Wait, Bus mission we managed to make it to Mycanae. Mum Nearly had a fit at some women in Corinth for giving us the wrong travel directions. But we made it. After spending nearly 24hours trapped in travel mode it was quite nice to take a stroll from new Tourist Mycane up to the old ruins. Washed clean by the thunder storm that we'd sat drinking beer through, it was at first sight a rather odd location for one of the greatest and wealthiest citys of the Homeric Age (Mycanae for the uninitiated being the home of Agamemmon, Agamemmnon being the king in charge of taking everyone off to fight Troy. Tucked up against an imposing but not entirely battle secure hill, it would have been a stiking ... read more

Note: you will have to excuse typos this keyboard is hopeless (and i simply cant be bothered!!) Time for another update before leaving Samos... Currently 10.13pm, a very hot evening we have spent watching Lost... now out for an email check, taking some photos of fish (flash makes them jump much to our amusement (lex says 'its more than amusement, its my life' - a bit severe i'm sure but you should all experience it at least once which will lead to a lot more than once!!), and possibly getting a bite to eat! Have enjoyed our time in Samos (despite the downers you can get where everyone seems blatantly out to screw you over (your wallet anyway!!)... This island (or at least Samos Town) seems to be a bit of a travel destination for the ... read more

Hour long bus trip here today... followed by several very sweaty, exhausting hours of looking for a place to stay (september seems to still be v busy in Samos!)... eventually did find somewhere and Ez bought his haggeling skills into full play... those particual indian ... read more
