Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Hey there My Blog readers Well today is our last day in Mykonos and we have done and seen a million things....walked our legs off in the maze that is the town of mykonos... (lets just say if there was an arial view we would have looked like two mice stuck in a maze and we were desperately looking for the way out. We would not be the GIFTED mice i would have to say) that was the structure of the town. Lets first talk about the wind of Mykonos. It blows ALL THE TIME. Always straight towards the beach no [View Full Entry]

Alright now lets get down to the nitty gritty. I am one bottle of vino and two shots down (one being OUZO) and I am thinking now is the time to talk Greek penis. Now at first read these words may shock some of my audience. But I believe this to be a great forum of which to talk about the underground sexual culture that I believe to be rampant in greece. Now it is from my very limited historic understanding that greek culture has always been somewhat suspect in the area of same sex ual interaction. Having been in the [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Santorini along with hundreds of other tourists. We approached the island through the caldera while everyone snapped photos. This place is like a dream. Is this for real? Perched high upon the caldera rim appearing to defy gravity, or at the very least, just waiting for gravity to do its work and pull the whole town of Fira into the sea. But it stays, thankfully, for the tourists. It's hard to describe the mob scene as we departed the ferry boat. Hundreds of people rushing forwards all with packs, suitcases, roller suitcases, motorcycles. We are at the base [View Full Entry]

Watching the donkeys, Santorini

Here I am in the Aegean, the blue waters, blue skies, the heat and the wind. The ladies really do mob you as you depart the ferry. I took the first room offered, it was so much more than the hostel in Athens; anything would have been more inviting than that hostel in Athens. Ah, those drunken Aussies, and their path of destruction. I watched as one sat on a sink, it collapsed, he fell on top of the porcelein and cut himself badly. He went to the hospital and I never saw him again. The ferry ride was nearly 7 [View Full Entry]

I fell asleep rather quickly last night. The gentle rolling of the boat actually felt relaxing. I think if I had had a few more beers it might not have proven very therapeutic because the seas felt rather rough. At about 2:00 am I was awoken by a loud part going on somewhere near our cabin. What had been such a quiet area during my daytime snooze was now sounding like a convention was going on next door. It sounded like a bunch of kids sitting around BS'ing. There wasn't piercing music or the sounds of dancing, but they would talk [View Full Entry]

I think Jurgen is even more excited than the rest of us going on the cruise. He had us up early and ready to board the bus at 8:00 am even though the ship wasn't scheduled to leave from Piraeus (less than half an hour away) until 11:00. After another nice breakfast buffet we said goodbye to the folks that were skipping the cruise and staying another day in Athens. Boarding the bus to Piraeus was pretty nice since each one of us had our own row of seats. I don't know if our bus driver (not Niko) was confused or [View Full Entry]

We've spent the last few days here in Mykonos with M.'s friends. We arrived in Mykonos around 8PM on Monday July 3rd, immediately felt better as the temperature was at least 20 degrees cooler than it had been in Cyprus. Also our bags made it on the same flight! It was an adventure just getting there as our flight from Cyprus had left 20 minutes late, only giving us about 50 minutes to connect in Athens, including busing from the remote stand and standing in line to get our boarding passes. M's friends S&V were there at the airport to pick [View Full Entry]

Santorini

Once we checked in to the Andromeda Villas, we were able to relax a bit. The accomodation, though having a slightly spartan feel, was comfy, and the views, well just look at the photos. You hear everyone talking about it, but you can't really appreciate Santorini unless you go there. We were staying in the area called Imerovigli, the highest point. We were on the cliff face, looking straight out towards the setting sun. [View Full Entry]

6/29-7/3 After a lovely stay in Crete we were told that Santorini is a must see. We were fortunate enough to time it right and meet up with our friends Jay and Stephanie who were vacationing there. After checking out there posh accomodations we found a cheaper version with less amenities (but an incredible view) next door and pretended we were guests at their fancier hotel while sitting poolside. A tad embarrassing but all in the spirit of backpacking. Santorini has such amazing natural beauty formed from volcanic rock. We had a great time exploring the dormant and active volcanos.
