Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. In World War II, Greece was first invaded by Italy (1940) and subsequently occupied by Germany (1941-44); fighting endured in a protracted civil war between royalist supporters of the king and communist rebels. Following the latter's defeat in 1949, Greece was able to join NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, lasted seven years. The 1974 democratic elections and a referendum created a parliamentary republic and abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Community or EC in 1981 (which became the EU in 1992); it became the 12th member of the euro zone in 2001.

Santorini, Thira, Stroggili, or Santa Irini, are many different names for the same beautiful island I visited with my wife for our honeymoon. After reading hundrends of reviews regarding Santorini island I concluded that this was the right choice for our Honeymoon. The next step as you can understand was to book the flight tickets and one of the nicest hotel possible. The first part was easy, since two greek airline companies had about twice everyday direct flights from Athens to Santorini airport. But, the second part.. yes, how to choose the right hotel among hundrends one? Therefore, I star [View Full Entry]

Napoli was a dirty crazy city. Totally run by the Mafia. Its dirty coz no one picks up the rubbish. Word is the Mafia used to run it, but they got kicked out. So now no one wants to do it, because that would be stepping on the mafia's turf, and that's not conducive to living a long life. The EU contributed about 20 million euros to helping the city's rubbish problem... which promptly disappeared. So now the garbage from the markets that overtake the main street (north africans selling fake Gucci which is mafia produced) out the front of where [View Full Entry]

This is the spot to view the famous sunset on Santorini
Walk to Oia at the end of Santorini Roger had some stuff he needed to do so I headed off alone for this one. I left early, 7.30 am, to walk from Fira to Oia. It was a really good walk around the edge of the caldera and took about 3 and ¾ hours. It began climbing up to the highest point of the caldera winding through several other villages. Some of the little streets passed through absolutely fabulous looking villa hotels. I noticed the “Relais and Chateau” signs and the “Small luxury hotels of the world”. As you would expect [View Full Entry]

The Greek Isles

After working Most of the coast south coast we decided we had better speed up and visit the islands. So planning a route with a few stops on the east coast of the Peleponnese with the finally destination being the Capital; Athens. I won’t go deep into details about the other attractions of this journey so as not to bore. So just one I will mention, Dira Caves. These were amazing, I don't think there would be many to rival these, most of it is viewed by boat. I'll just let you check out some pics so you can make up [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone! I am not going to apologize again for how long it's taken me to get another blog up as I have a)just accepted the fact that I am not going to be able to update this blog as much as I would like (I hope you can accept that, too) and b)I quite happy with the fact that I am out experiencing my trip instead of spend hours behind a computer telling you about it. That's not to say I don't love sharing my adventures with everyone, but I have found myself stressing over not writing as much lately [View Full Entry]

I have 7 minutes before I am kicked off of this computer, so I am going to make this short. This is no secret, but Santorini is just one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's like Big Sur attempted poorly at an immitation of this. Dave and I managed to find the biggest steal on the island. We stubled across a modest, yet beautiful place tucked right into the cliffs of the Caldera. I will give more detail on the place later as anyone coming here on a bidget needs to stay at this place! Today is Dave's birthday. [View Full Entry]

We are now in Santorini. The flight from Australia went quite smoothly except for an extra delay by Qantas in Singapore making it a 5 hour stop. At least this allowed for a nap of about 1 hour on the floor. We spent our first night in Rome. It was hot and we didn’t have much energy but enjoyed a short walk around the city backstreets and a meal out at night. We were pleased to get our Skype set up working and spoke to the girls at home via a video link. Quite fun really and next to no charge [View Full Entry]

Santorini

Hi Guys! Before I tell you about Greece (thus far) I need to make a few comments, or apologies, about my blog posts. Please try your best to overlook spelling and grammer errors. I usually consider myself a fairly decent writer, however I can't spell (I'm a spellcheck generation baby) and I am usually writing these very late at night or in quite a hurry and trying to squeeze as much information in as I can in the few minutes I have and don't have much time for proof reading. So please forgive me! There is also no way I can [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone. I hope your all good. Things are all good with us. We left Matala 7 days ago now. It was a tiny village on the south coast of Crete. Really nice. Not too much to do so it was basically a lot of beach time. The sea there is crystal clear and its the best snorkelling Ive done yet. Saw so many different fish and all different colours. I had to buy a underwater camera to get pics . The bus in Matala went to 3 different places around there so we "did" all them. They were all small [View Full Entry]
