The Crew
Sarah, Lisa, Arty, Nikki, Jason, Jo - Out near the Donkey Pepper The next day I went for a walk through the streets and look at all the shops and the donkeys making their way through the steep winding hills as they made their way up the stairs... Sarah thought that there was an overwhelming smell of pepper, turned out to be donkey pepper!! Awesome view, awful smell!!
Next day woke up and it was cloudy, after Arty told me that it’s NEVER cloudy in Santorini!! What’s going on there?!?!?! Had brekkie (with cake at the end!! Love holidays!!) and then to Maria to have the obligatory frappe who is just adorable and works so hard for 8 months of the year, 7 days a week!!
Then off to the beach, so caught the bus to Perissa which has black sand and smooth rocks and the nice man who bought us the 2 litres of wine, souvlaki and chips under a rented umbrella and beach chair, for a total of 7 euros each, deliver to us!! So cheap and I think I love that guy!!!
And who could forget that lady… ‘Oh look what they’re eating, Geek salad, surprise, surprise, I’ve only been here a week and I’m so sick
of the food already!’ I can safely say that that definitely DID NOT happen to us!!!
On the way back to catch the bus I got the best strawberries and ice cream that I’ve had in years!! Mmmmm!!
Then we headed off to watch another perfect sunset!
My favourite spot was Fanaris - which was the first place we had dinner in Santorini…excellent waiters, perfect food and amazing location with sensational company… what more could you want? It doesn’t get any better than that.
We went to the Olive Tree for dinner and had a whole bunch of entrees… life is so easy when you have Arty there to order and deal with everything in Greek, stress free travelling I like to call it! Makes you dead lazy though you know!
After that we went to Enigma - love the place! Open aired bar with couch style booths, Jo the superstar came and joined us in our celebration over 2 bottles of vodka! Jo is a classic, such a fun and happy girl and I’m so glad I met this crazy girl!! Jo - We love you too!!!
On the Monday, we lost Nikki
back to the mainland… it was oddly quiet without her!! We missed you heaps Nikki!!!
We sunbaked and drank more cocktails (to drown our sorrows of course!! Because of course we needed encouragement) I wondered off to do some souvenir shopping then we caught the bus to Oia (pronounced E-a) to watch the sunset, as it was hotly debated as to whether it was the best sunset there or not. It was lovely, but I have to say it wasn’t my favourite, setting over the volcano was, it’s something special.
It was Jason’s birthday the next day, so we all sunbaked a while (for a change!!) then I went to do a bit more shopping. We had cake and champagne by our pool for Jason’s birthday whilst we wondered what the poor people were doing!! We did the norm and went to Franco’s for sunset then dinner at Fanari for dinner (seeing a pattern here?!??!) we drank lots of wine and watched our last sunset fade… it was sad!! The waiter at Fanari’s recognised Art, thought that she was our tour guide as she’s in Santorini so much!! He gave us free sweet wine, which is like port
- they joked and stacked glasses with Jason. It was such a good night! We finished it off at Koo Bar with more vodka of course!! With our new addition to the group - Sam & Elanor - finally made it home by 4.30am which was a quiet night for once!! Hehe!!
Everyone was a bit under the weather the next day so I had breakfast alone to begin with! Sarah managed to surface and join me! We had lunch all together then Jo left and we all went for a walk and bought Mati (evil eye) for each other to keep the evil away. You don’t buy them for yourself as its bad luck.
We left and went back to Athens, I was feeling sooo very sick…. Nikki came and picked us up from the airport, thanks Nikki!!!! I was dying of the flu for the whole week, always happens to me when I’m on holidays!! I met Felix & Anne, Arty’s cousins and they were just lovely!! They bought Art guacamole cause she couldn’t bring wine with the airport crackdown for liquids… guacamole isn’t readily available in Greece!!
On the Wednesday it was time to
go… leaving today… NOooooooo!!! Had a frappe making lesson hosted by Arty… we were all dying and it was ‘The Day of the Cross’ so it was a Chemist holidays - no one else was on the holiday though!! Just our luck! And codeine is banned in Greece so cold and flu tablets were few and far between!!!
We went and got some cheese pies to eat since we were all starving! and sat around having our final frappe’s… I have to say I was feeling a little down, but was trying not to behave that way, I’d waited so long to catch up with Arty and couldn’t believe that it had come to a close soooo soon… just didn’t seem fair and I didn’t want to go.. but all good things must come to an end and that was that.
Arty drove me to the airport (Thanks hon!) and the crew said goodbye as I walked away… it’s not goodbye though, just see ya for a little while! I know I’ll be back!!! And Arty’s promised me that we’ll try to co-ordinate future overseas trips together in years to come!!
I was feeling a little lost
in the airport, wondering around trying to occupy my time before check-in. Once it was time to go I went through x-ray forgetting that in the bid to lighten my bag I put a bunch of stuff in my carry on and forgot about my scissors which have now been culled!! There’s no food or drinks or anything when you are at your gate at the airport!! Very bizzare!
Have to say on my leaving day talk about windy!! You forget about how you look (even though I don’t bother much at home!) and felt like I was starting to look like a real traveller - bra straps showing, leather strap around my wrist (evil eye) and a tan (yay!!) with crinkled pants and thongs - very attractive look!!
I sat in the airport looking over my photos of the last week, smiling at the fun times and thankful for the friends I have and the ones I made… It was nice to have a group to travel with, and all the personalities just seemed to work. Wish I could have stayed longer, but it was time to leave and am looking forward to the next leg of
the adventure!!
At the end of the day it wasn’t about whether the island was dirty and dusty, it was about time spent with friends, old and new, wine and sunshine… thanks guys!! You’re all awesome!! Especially my room mate Arty!! Love ya!!
I learn some essential items from my Greek friends, my language skills could use some work but hey, I managed to form a whole sentence by the end of the trip and it went something like this… Se thelo, skisou, lapon, gamo, efharisto - probably not that appropriate, but could have been useful!! Oh well, tried your best!!! Hehe!!
Guys, I’m looking forward to my beatings!!!
Anyways, I’m off now, don’t want to miss my bus to Naxos…
