13th June 2011. Had a long lie until 7:30! The air was alive with the rythmic buzz of Cicadas and Crickets telling me what I already knew....it was hot....damn hot!! A quick look out of the tent at blue skies and a heat haze rippling the baked soil under the Olive trees and I ventured out in search of coffee. I shooed the chickens out of the kitchen and quickly found all the ingredients for breakfast, there was no one about? Next to the rustic camp kitchen is a shaded eating area and I hunkered down in there watching the ground bake in the sun. The sound of voices in casual conversation filtering through the 3 m high wall of bamboo that stands between camp and the beach, told me someone was coming and then a ... read more

11th June 2011. Yesterday's evening on the terrace turned into five hours of watching the wotld go by. As the sun fell behind the pine trees behind me fireflies began to sparkle in the growing darkness. I stared lazily trying to predict their next flash point. I didn't feel like moving and so didn't bother going to find something to eat. Then the ominous diving whine of the pregnant female mosquito looking for blood forced me to go inside. When you hear that zrzrzrzrzrzrrzzzrrrzzzrrzrzrzrrrzzzz whine it's already too late cause a couple of silent assassins have already got you! Sure enough, little B@#$%^*s!! The lazy mood from last night continued into the morning as I returned to the terrace for three cups of coffee...grazzi Marta...Grazzi Marta...Grazzi Mille Marta....but by ten o'clock I decided I better get ... read more

We just finished dinner at Goody's, a fast food knock-off next to the Holiday Inn here on Odos Attiki near the Athens Airport. The hotel is okay, they tried very hard to make it a Star Trek type of place, ugly from the exterior, the interior will be dated very soon. The Goody's place was okay. We drove a total of 950 kilometers over the last two days, about half of them coming today, at altitudes up to 1600 meters and torrential rain. I have had enough of driving for a while. The car, a Hyundai Accent, in the event I neglected to mention it struggled direly to hit the 130 km/h, about 80 MPH on the home stretch from Corinth to Athens. Just a quick update.... We made our way into Greece sucessfully and managed to get to the camp on the very confusing greek trains with the help of a few very nice locals! We are now at our camp right by the water, we can here the waves on the beach from our tents. There is alot of work to be down around camp, washing, setting up, cutting bamboo, marking out the beach, preparing grids and soon we will be starting morning and night surveys wher we will walk the beaches and in morning survey watch for turtle tracks and nests. On night survey we will be taking measurements of the turltes and tagging them if they have not been already. There are mountains around us and the water is turquoise blue. The food here is ... read more

Since Sunday is the typical day of rest, we decided to rest more than usual. This day was the “villa” day, which meant we tried to not go anywhere if possible. We layed around, read books, and listened to Rachel’s music. Her music was better than what the villa had to offer, which were CDs of the Best of the Bee Gees, the Best of George Michael, and the Best of Ricky Martin. I also spent the morning trying to plan out our next few days at the villa. As everyone who has traveled with me knows, I love looking at maps and reading guide books. I found a new book about this region and dove in. I was heckled for my planning, but I ignored them because I know that they will ultimately see my ... read more

Daniel and I both woke up feeling much better today, which made Rachel happy because she didn’t want to hang around with a bunch of old fogies(SPELLING) that were falling apart. I could finally see in the sun and Daniel didn’t have a napkin hanging out the end of his nose. Today we took off to Tholo beach, which is north of our holiday villa in Kalo Nero by about 5-10 miles or so. I had read that it is sandy, clean, and uncrowded. All this things were true. We could have easily found a spot all to ourselves if we walked a little bit down the beach. However, there were free umbrellas and chairs near our car, so we snagged them up. Daniel was the first in the water as usual. “Cold” he said ... read more

Our first full day on the west coast of the Peloponnese and we are all a bit beat. We wake up at 10am and have a nice breakfast outside on our patio. We have four choices of juices to choose from: peach, cherry, and mix of some sort. We really need to expand the typical juice selection in America. We love these flavors. After nourishment, we head off to town to find the internet café. Finally, we post the first of our blogs. Of course, there are no pictures. We plan to add those as some point before we leave. I had no idea how much time it took to write up trips like this. There never seems to be time to catch up on documenting our trip even though it is pretty mellow. After ... read more
