Wednesday 15th
Arrived at Santorini, but no chance we will go ashore - no dock, ashore by tender.
The island was formed by a volcanic eruption (the world’s largest ever) eons ago - the resultant tidal wave (estimated 200+ feet high) wiped out the Minoan civilization and is believed by some to have caused the disappearance of Atlantis
In any event, the main town is situated on the top of the cliffs, accessible from the port only by cable car or by donkey up the zig-zag “road”. The houses are brilliant white-washed structures, some built right on the edge of the cliffs. An earthquake in 1956 caused a lot of damage on the island.
Heaps of things to do on board so we weren’t bored by not going ashore.
Thursday 16th
Today’s port of call is Corfu, docking at 1300.
The decision again is to remain on board. Joan doesn’t fancy walking, or falling into the hands of Greek bandits (shopkeepers).
With most visitors ashore we continued our exploration of all corners of the ship. Planned to spend an hour or two in the ship’s Casino, but when visiting a port most of
the amenities (shops, casino) are closed until we sail again (2000 tonight).
Joan booked another hair appointment for tomorrow.
Tried to use the ship’s internet but couldn’t log on. Message said (Contact Guest Assistant - Purser). Appears my credit card (Westpac) had been suspended. Called Westpac who advised that the money we’d spent shopping in Kusadasi appeared suspicious and because they didn’t know we were overseas they suspended the account!!!!! They suggested I should call into the nearest Westpac bank!! After answering many, many questions to prove who I was, the bank lady agreed to re-open the account. Has anyone seen any fine print saying you need to advise your credit card provider if you go overseas???
Sailing all day tomorrow, so will visit the Casino after Joan’s hair appointment.
Take care.
Joan and Chesty
