Triopetra is based in the south of Crete. It is approximately 2.5 hours’ drive from Heraklion and 3.5 hours from Chania airport. It is situated at the foot of the Siderotas mountain and surrounded by numerous olive greens - just one of the island’s locally sourced fresh produce that is on offer.

Triopetra is named after the 3 rocks that reside within the sea, at the edge of the peninsula which help to create a breath-taking backdrop to the main beach. Triopetra literally translates to “three rocks”.

There are two beaches in Triopetra, separated by a small peninsula. The first is known as Koumado (meaning “small Triopetra”) and is situated within a small and rocky bay. For experienced swimmers and adventurers there is even a beautiful ‘batcave’ accessible is you can muster the endurance for a swim lasting an hour or so to get there and back.

The main beach of West Triopetra is located, as you might expect, to the west of the 3 rocks, and runs for several miles. The sea is a beautiful deep blue. It is very easy to swim and snorkel in thanks to the added buoyancy that the salty water provides. It is full of a variety of large beautiful rocks just beneath the surface, and several species of fish scattered nearby to them. The beach is calm and relaxing, and complimented by a mild etesian wind.

One of the main attractions for holiday-makers in Triopetra, is the Yoga retreat which is situated a ten minute walk from the larger beach. Running from the end of April until October, there are several different styles of yoga and meditation available from numerous teachers from across the world.

The beautiful, unspoilt location is perfect for yogis looking to practice, relax and spend time with like-minded people. The area is secluded and accessible only via a dirt road. However, if you do get tired of the vegetarian food on offer at the yoga retreat there is a local tavern that serves a variety of fish dishes and beer!

Crete is however, an island to be explored as it has so much to offer. The popular activities across the island include jet skiing, wind surfing and rock climbing. For those of us who are less energetic, there are dozens of beautiful walks through the hills and winding dirt roads of the island and local wineries to visit.

The quality of the locally sourced food makes Crete an island worth visiting in itself. Olives and figs are grown across the island, the local cheese made from sheep or goat’s milk is a must-try, and amazing local dishes include Fried snails, cheese pies and smoked pork.

For those interested specifically in the Yoga retreat, the hosts – Phil & Helen can be contacted directly from their website or Facebook page. There is some more info about my trip over on my MMA blog .

Apologies for the lack of actual yoga in the photos!
