You can return to the text anytime. Sunday 17th September: the transfer from Plakias to Rethymno. This involved very little driving as Rethymno is only 22 miles from Plakias and I knew the route pretty well. Accordingly, we had an easy day in Plakias and although we had to check out at midday we were allowed to stay in the very pleasant central courtyard of the hotel, and make use of the swimming pools, until ... read more

Matkalaukkunihan on pehmeä, joten pitää suojata särkyvät esineet. ... read more

August is the time when you need to enjoy some sort of sun, unfortunately the UK does not provide enough of this so Crete it is! This holiday was found by my sissy, Jess, and we were set to go with a mother, aka Granny, and baby Arthur, in tow. Travelling with children is hard, however, we get to push in all the time which makes it better! Before going we were worried about the euro money troubles. On arrival the Island seemed to be functioning well with shops still open, people working, buses running, and money being spent. Crete is the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and it is Greeces biggest. It's located in the Aegean Sea and has brilliant mountain landscapes as well as clean beaches and hot sunshine. We stayed in ... read more

We stayed at the Cambridge Hotel in Horley the night before we flew as our flight was at 8.15am. The flight was delayed by 2 hours as the windscreen wipers on the plane were broken and as it was drizzly rain in Gatwick, they couldn’t see to take off!! So after taxing down to the runway for take-off – we then had to taxi back to the stand where the little problem was fixed! We then had to wait for more fuel (due to all the taxing around!!) before waiting for another slot for take-off!! Anyway, he made up time flying and we arrived in Crete about 3.00pm. An hour and a half transfer to Rethymnon and onto our Hotel Astali in the town. The hotel is run by a very friendly Mother with her two ... read more

We caught the bus from the local Bus Station (6 euros each person, each way) and went to Chania! It took about an hour but very pleasant journey running along the coast! Chania was massive!! I had imagined a small walled village but it was an enormous town with two rows of fortifications and a huge Venetian Harbour! Wandered down from the bus station, through the narrow touristy streets, past the old walls, down to the harbour. The dockyards originally contained 17 Neoria’s built in 1599 (storage sheds!) but only five were now left. Walked out to 16th C lighthouse, for views of the harbour and the snow-capped mountains and then back along to the Giali Tzamisi mosque built in the 17thand the ‘Firka’ Fortress on the Northwest side of the port. Spent ages watching an ... read more

Built around a Venetian Fortress, the streets were cobblestone and the alleyways were again packed with shops, which were all slumbering at the moment we arrived. We found our hotel (Hotel Faro – meaning lighthouse) and when the keeper showed us to our room we thought there had been a mistake. “I know, I know, it’s okay, I know,” he said in a soft Greek accent as if to calm us from the shock of looking at a full suite complete with a large balcony that looked over the waterfront restaurants. A part of the Venetian fortress stood proudly in our view, making the whole scene even more poetic. Luck had smiled upon us due to the fact that another guest had decided to stay in the room that was supposed to be ours and because ... read more

Er ... read more

Hi there! Departured from Athens in a night ferry to Crete Island - single room with bed, privat bathroom, TV - 60eur round trip! Once you arrive at the Heraklion portyou can either go to the left side of the island, wich, forme, it's the best - Chania and Rethymno - or to the right side Lassithi... When we first got there it was a little bit disapointing because we were expecting those caribbean style endless white sand beaches and hollow water and istead we've got face to face with rocks at the beggining and dark sand latter... that's what you get when you plan your trip the cheapest way possible- we had to walk about 15 min. everyday to get to nearest beach, from our hotel... Despite all the disapointments on the arrival and after coming ... read more
