The drive back into Greece was very long! Our plan was to aim for a camp site south of Thessaloniki where I would rest up while Kim Travelled back to work at the Boat Show in Southampton. We arrived about 9.30pm to find the camp site in darkness, and ended up sleeping in the Bongo on a side road just outside town. Kim had 1 full day prior to jetting off, so we had to find a place, the campsite had closed a week or so earlier, the season appears to end early here. Another campsite we found was pretty deserted and nowhere near any kind of life. Getting a bit anxious, we hunted down a lady with apartments to rent, and in no time we were set (it was almost as cheap as camping!). Nea ... read more

Steve set the alarm for 8am and I finally managed to drag myself out of bed around 9am. I took a nice shower although I forgot to turn on the water heater and the water got a little chilly toward the end. I went upstairs and got dressed and asked Steve if he was going to get up. He said no and pulled the blanket over his head. I went back downstairs and had a yogurt but was still starving from all the fresh clean village air so I decided to make ham and eggs.I only cooked for me since Steve had said he wasn’t getting up. Of course as soon as I sat down and started to eat Steve came downstairs and was like “WTF you cooked for one?” Em yea - I thought since ... read more

The first stop we made was to Mandoulides Elementary School to meet the principal and staff and to get a tour of their facilities. Mandoulides is a private school that was established in 1978 as a primary school and in 1991 they expanded their school to include a junior high and high school. When you check out the pictures, please keep in mind this is a private school that is able to charge tuition. With that being said, WOW!!! This place was amazing! Their staff was equally impressive. They told us about their English Garden program that is optional, but it helps their children become bilingual by the age of 5. Starting at the age of 3, the children are immersed in an all English classroom each day and after a couple years these children will ... read more

We started the day by visiting Aristotle University and listened to two college professors explain how they prepare their college students to become teachers. We heard several things that Greece has in common with The United States, but there are a few differences. Right now the current debate is whether or not religion should be taught in the public schools and what history should be taught. The biggest difference for teachers here in Greece is that when they start their careers, they are appointed by the state to their position with no regard as to how far away this position might be from where they are living. After that, we visited Peiramatiko Elementary School. We had a nice conversation with the principal and several teachers. The school was founded in 1913. Next we visited The White ... read more

We had a meeting at the town hall to hear a representative for the mayor. We were also joined by the Consulate General of the United States. The Consulate General was very impressive and the discussion we had with the assistant to the mayor was very informative. We came away with more of an understanding of the struggles Greece is facing right now. Next, we headed to the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Our guide for Greece led us around the entire museum, and he gave us so much information it will be hard for me to put it all in this blog. This post won’t be very long, but please check out each picture because I believe you will learn from them. After spending over two hours there, it was time for lunch. We went to ... read more

Hello from the land of the gods! This is just a quick update to let people know that I am here, and safe. I haven't been to sleep since Thursday morning...so I'm getting the that loopy state. This was because my flight was at 6:50am this morning out of Gatwick. To get there, I caved and did an easybus from around Earl's Court at 3am with my lovely flatmates Jenna Thrash and Leslie Hart. Never again. =) Anyway, I arrived in Thessaloniki about noon local time. This is a two hour difference from London...so six hour difference from the east coast? From there, it was pretty simple to find the hostel I am staying at for the night. However, if you think the french people are bad about people not being able to speak their language, ... read more

Ode To Frogbert Hi Catherine & Brent Push "View Full Entry" now. It was hard having to leave poor Frogbert behind in London after he had got used to having us around for 12 days. On the flight over to Athens, I wrote the following: In May of 2006 Our daughter crossed the sea Her friends all call her Cath But to us she Catherine, or CC. In London she stayed first with her brother Good jobs were hard to find And so, she discovered, was a man Of the understanding, caring kind. And then Frogbert came into her life A cuddly froggy boy He was a valuable companion But not quite the Real McCoy. Then her brother had a brainwave He suggested to his little sis “If you want to meet Prince Charming Why not ... read more

Kalamera, or good Good Morning, Everyone Here we are in Thesasaloniki, the capital of Macedonia, on the shores of the Aegean Sea, in the far NE of Greece. This is the start of the fifth day of our 7 day tour, but already it feels like we have been travelling for about 10 days! Because we have a late start this morning, it is the first time that we have had a chance to communicate in any way. Since we will now have 3 nights in this hotel, which has free wi-fi in all the rooms, we will be able to commumicate more. We have just caught up with blog messages and emails. We are both well and have come through four days of continuous activity in high temperatures with nothing worse than some foot, knee, ... read more
