Blogs from Mount Olympos, Central Macedonia, Greece, Europe
Well, after being in Thessaloniki for four days, we got on the bus and drove away. We were heading to Meteora to visit the monasteries. We passed Mt. Olympus on the way, but I never got a good picture from the bus. Sorry. My pictures and my descriptions will not do justice to the stunning beauty I saw today. I’ve seen amazing. I’ve seen unimaginable. I’ve seen wonders of God’s awesome power to blend together his beautiful creation with the things of man. And that is what I saw today. When you are in the presence of such natural beauty and such divine devotion, you can’t help but be touched. There were six working monasteries, four for monks and two for nuns, and we could have visited each one if we had the time. However, we ... read more

Published: September 29th 2008Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Mount OlymposThursday, 11th September 2008 - Kozani I had my cloths washed in a washing shop for the local students and asked people for a cheap hostel to stay. A beautiful girl (there are so many of them in this town) recommended a hotel near the center: Anesis Hotel. They charged me 25 Euro for the cheapest room they had with a shared bathroom. In the evening I made contact to a local shop owner on the central square of Kozani, which is a great place to relax, talk and watch the passing people. His name is Baschos, he worked in Germany before, so we could talk in German. His family and friends and their family also passed by and we talked very nice till 1 AM in the night. Best experience was when Alikmini, the 62 ... read more
Dion & Mt Olympos - Day 15
Published: November 16th 2011Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Mount OlymposWe wanted to go to Meteora today, but when I looked it up in the guidebook to find information, I noticed that the biggest monastery was closed on Tuesdays. So much for that then I guess. So we decided to go with the back up plan and go to Dion and Mt Olympos instead. But first Magda had made plans for us all to have breakfast at her friend's house around the corner. We had sausage turnovers, cheese turnovers and ham and cheese tost. Breakfast seemed to drag on forever as I was anxious to get on the road so we would have plenty of time at Dion and Mt Olympos. Steve mentioned casually would I mind if his mom dropped off some things at a friend’s house in Katerini since we would be passing right ... read more
My Greek Odyssey - Part 2 - Mt Olympus
Published: September 8th 2006Europe » Greece » Central Macedonia » Mount OlymposWhat 2 days these have been, What a rare mood I'm in, Why it's almost like.......I made it to the top of Mt Olympus!!!! Whilst only 2,918m, it was a fantastic buzz and hard work going up (on the lungs) and down (on the knees and ankles). From the beginning........ I left Athens with nothing more than the knowledge that the small village of Litohoro was the starting point for the Mt Olympus climb, no help provided except for a copy of the bus timetable by the Greek tourist information office in Athens! I caught the train to Leptokaria, caught a cab to Litohoro and then went in search of information and accommodation. The taxi driver had pointed up the road so that is the direction I headed. No 'pensiones' in sight, I asked the souvenir ... read more
We were told breakfast was at 7.30, so we made sure we were ready to go. I didn't sleep that well, the bed was really hard. Breakfast consisted of a boiled egg, and bread with either jam or marmalade. While we were eating, the church bell tolled just outside our window, and we didn't think anything of it, but the lady said the reason was because a man had died during the night. Kind of eerie. After breakfast I went for a walk to see if I could find some information on climbing Mt. Olympus. The lady at the hotel was being quite negative about the climb, and was insisting that we stay another night even though we had learned that it was to rain tomorrow. The conditions were overcast, although you could see the summit ... read more
