Early april in europe, 5°C in Germany and rain. Arrived in Athens 25°, sunny and holiday mood. I was told by nearly everyone who was in Athens that its a dirty huge city with 50-60s style of buildings, everything looks the same, the people arrogant, everything sucks, well in general instead of going to Athens you can go to hell and it still would be better.
However, this is the total opposite of what I have experienced. I enjoyed Athens from the first day til my departure day(back in Germany, it's still raining and cold).
The only annoying thing were the inhabitants..But oh well, Greeks. Indeed the architecture was rather ugly (I like old architecture) and everything was dusty but the city had it's own charm. Near the Acropolis the streets become very narrow which I found really beautiful. All the monuments looked breathtaking like on the postcards, and the dust even emphasized the feeling of being a witness of something antique and magical.
Everywhere you see dogs sleeping on the ground, it looks like all dogs in Athens are dead, but they are quite funny and friendly.( and well fed!)
The food is very tasty, and not too expensive even
in the main tourist streets, but the best food I had was in Pireaus at a dusty street by the sea. What made me wonder is that, the french fries in Greece taste a whole different from just any other place. They actually taste like real potato and not paper! Aspecially with Zaziki, a whole new world. The meat is very very good, yet Vladikavkaz outspaces it big time. However I enjoyed Athens very very much, and I hope to visit it some time soon again.
The entry to the Acropolis costs 12 Euro, unless you are student. So am I, but I didn't have any official paper that stated it..So I just showed my bus card from Germany and got in for free. So if you aren'T a student or don't have your papers with you, try your luck!
Thanks to Kyr!
