As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro. To be updated

Whilst the UK partied over the Queens Jubilee weekend I decided to miss this oncein a lifetime opportunty and head to Germany for the long weekend. The main reason for the trip was to catch up again with Jeorg, a friend I'd met travelling in SE Asia, but also to try to see a little more of Germany rather than the Bier Gardens and Bier Halls which had so dominated my previous trip. Before Germany however I had to manage to successfully overcome a Friday night in London. I was faced with a dilemma. My flight left Stansted at 6:50am. Stansted [View Full Entry]

Trip to Germany Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg
My first foreign trip Actually Germany is the first country that I visited outside India. It was on official purpose only (actually all my trips abroad is taken during an official trip only). I was so glad, the very thought of visiting one of the developed nations of Europe made me very happy and the fatherland that was once ruled by Hitler added to my eagerness. The day was Sunday March 10, 2002 when I boarded the Lufthansa flight from Bangalore to Frankfurt. I was traveling alone and people scared me of all the procedures that I need to follow, but [View Full Entry]

Germany seemed big when we didn´t know how to drive on the right hand side of the road and none of the street signs made any sense. Actually, the place is really tiny. We had been planning on spending a few nights in Rothenburg, but when we got up and visited a few sights in the morning, we felt we might as well see how far we could get in a day. My foot has been troubling me since we arrived - I think I have sprained something in it - and after a few hours walking it gives up completely. [View Full Entry]

Munich..... I lost the text for this adventure, and I'm not going to get the whole narrative back. Highlights - Feigling and a very drunk night in a hotel. - Cherry-spitting Olympics from a cathedral. - Tasting a delicious honey-saturated pastry-treat. - The Olympic village. - Visiting Englisher Garden, which is like Forest Park, Central Park, or Golden Gate Park for those of you who know those parks. - Going to an acutal beer garden with lederhosen and polkas and everything. They sang this song; someone once told me how it goes. "In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus, eins, zwei, dr [View Full Entry]

Note: The photographs that I have included on this blog are not my own; they are borrowed from a variety of other TravelBlog users. Thank you. I woke up this particular morning bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I had no more problems with jet lag the rest of the time in Europe. The train ride to Cologne was so smooth, only took about an hour. I think that I figured it out; the air feels so different because its not humid like it is in my hometown. I’d worn my hair does for almost the whole time I was there, and it didn’t [View Full Entry]
