Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

On the Autobahn to Neuenhof
Thursday, May 1st: We travelled from Bad Soden to Neuenhof today. The 200 km ride was somewhat hampered by a 10 km traffic jam caused by a combination of holiday traffic and a construction area on the autubahn. Did we mention we were chauffeured in a brand new BMW? Our hosts, the Beck's, who are old friends of Pat's mom, picked us up and took us to their house in the old DDR for a couple of nights. That evening, in true German fashion, a HUGE meal of Thuringer sausage and pork chops was served, enough to feed twice as many [View Full Entry]

Weimar and Erfurt

 Europe » Germany » Thuringia » Weimar
After heading off early in the morning we cruised up from Cologne to Weimar along the beloved German autobahn. Around 400kms covered in around 2.5 hours. For those who haven't been on one, it's a pretty awesome experience. Also probably one of the only places that you can be going at 180km/h and be overtaken. We arrived mid morning, and I went for a walk through the industrial area of Erfurt whilst Peter took care of some business at his office. My walk gave me a quick look at a side of Germany I had never experienced, East Germany. As Peter [View Full Entry]

For the past six days, my classmates and I have gone on a whirlwind tour of everything that is Martin Luther. It was a group trip intended to complement our theology/history class: Luther and Bach. Our schedule looked like this: Feb 26- Reutlingen to Erfurt Feb 27- Erfurt to Eisenach to Wittenberg Feb 28- Wittenberg Feb 29- Wittenberg to Leipzig Mar 1- Leipzig Mar 2- Leipzig to Reutlingen The trip went better than I had expected. The group from VU that was in Germany last semester had warned us that the trip was boring and some of them even snuck off [View Full Entry]

Bobbing About!

 Europe » Germany » Thuringia
Hi Friends and Family, It’s our last day in Oberhof. We’ve been having such a wonderful time. It’s just great to be here in the country. Today, it was time to do some cultural stuff and some lets-get-dirty-in-the-snow stuff! I checked out the possibilities of the day and rang up a lady that organised horse-pulled traps about the village. We had hired a private horse and buggy on the Aran Islands in EIRE ( The Republic of Ireland ) and that was a great experience. "The Small Young Gentleman" was three years old then and promptly fell asleep as soon as [View Full Entry]

Another Day!
Another Day!
On a frozen pond.
Hi Friends and Family, It was soooo good to wake up whenever we wanted to but not exactly whenever as breakfast was available until 10:00 and it was 08:30 already. By the time we had jumped into the shower and got ourselves looking decent, it was 09:15. Not a lot of time really. Ah well! We had a really nice buffet breakfast which was full to the core. It consisted of cooked stuff like sausages and bacon (Yeah!), fried eggs, potatoes, boiled eggs, a huge variety of German breads and cold cuts, cheese, fruit and veg, cereal, help-yourself-hot-chocolate ( the children [View Full Entry]

In Oberhof, Thuringia

 Europe » Germany » Thuringia
Hi Family and Friends, I went to bed pretty late at about 01:30 and at 04:00, I was up again! Bleary eyed, I went through the motions of taking a bath, stuffing the last few things into our suitcases and making sandwiches for our train journey. I figured that if we left the house at 06:00, we would have more than enough time to get the 06:40 train at Hbf or the Main Central Train Station. I didn't reckon on the fact that we would miss the bus as we saw it merrily driving away....! "The Small Young Gentleman" found it [View Full Entry]

Getting Ready to Ski!

"The Small Young Gentleman" and I
Once upon a time, briefly settled in a German village.
Hi Friends and Family, As promised, a new journey is beginning yet again. "The Small Young Gentleman" and I are going to Oberhof in Thuringia, Germany for (hopefully) a spot of skiing and a means to which we can spend some quality time together. We’ll be leaving early on Friday morning and returning late on Sunday evening. Oberhof is a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district of Thuringia, Germany. It is a winter sports center and health resort. It has roughly 1,600 inhabitants (2005), but is visited by tenfold as many tourists every year. Situated directly on the Rennsteig - a [View Full Entry]

Gera

 Europe » Germany » Thuringia
Gera is situated in the eastern part of Thueringia State on the river Elster with a population of more than a hundred thousand. In 1945, it was heavily bombed and destroyed a huge portion of the city's historical buildings. It was once part of the German Democratic Republic or East Germany until 1990. This city is very close to my heart. I often visited this place and pretty much enjoyed it. Although, Gera is the second biggest city in Thueringia State, it feels more like a small town and very much predictable. Its not so high driven, fast face city. You [View Full Entry]
