My journey began with an early morning drive to Seattle. Laurie went into the airport with me to make sure everything was squared away. We checked my bag and said our goodbyes at the security checkpoint. I then made my way to my gate - the calm before the 10 hour flight to Amsterdam. The flight went surprising well - no turbulance, only a few crying children and a nice neighbor traveling to Hungary. There was on demand movies also. It was great. I didn't even listen to my iPod! More importantly, the food was fantastic! I was shocked after hearing some horror stories. In Amsterdam i didn't see much. After going through the passport check there were only a few things - currency exchange, a bar and a last minute market. Everything was just a ... read more

Day 12 - Monday I got up early to see the last sights of Lepizig and Susan joined me. This is one historic town and I will recommend to Dr. Meyer that we come back in the near future. The program at the BMW Plant was very interesting. It's plant number 22 of 22. Maybe 5 years old. They assemble about 425-725 series 1 and 3 per cars per day. I do not know anything about BMWs, but the plant tour was fascinating. Read the Ex Summary by Joe and David in the DrakeSmart website, . Sorry, no pictures allowed. By the way, Dr. Meyer was in heaven at the plant. We were able to see the body shop, which is almost 100 percent automated with robotics. Words can't describe how this works. Then we went ... read more

Day 11 - Sunday in Germany I see it’s Spring now and the weather so far has been awesome. I hear it’s very warm in Des Moines. But 45-50 degrees so far is what we expected here. The weather is now turning just as Carole is leaving. Thanks Carole! I got up at 3:30 am to see Carole, Marti and Cate off to the airport and went back to bed. That was a mistake. I fell asleep for 3 hours and felt awful. Good thing I was already packed. Ate the last of our fabulous breakfast and let me tell you our breakfast at the Berlin Ramada hotel has been FANTASTIC! The breads and croissants are to die for. The bacon and eggs are like ours and the juice and coffee, very tasty. I hate to ... read more

Our last night in Wittenberg, we got together with some German residents who meet with American tourists whenever possible to improve their English speaking skills while we got the inside scoop on life in Eastern Germany during the times of the wall. She told us how she was scared at times and found out she was being watched by the DDR for some time because she had relatives living in the West. For the most part she didn’t think much of living in the East and saw one of her greatest obstacles to be that she ordered a car when she earned her license and it took her ten years to actually receive it! I can’t imagine. I know that it would most bother me to not be able to travel where I wished; I’ve been ... read more

Of Carneval, Bach and Hot Chocolates Last weekend, that was on the 3rd of February, 2008, we decided to go to Leipzig (home of Johann Sebastian Bach). Because the Karnival was going on in Cologne, which is 5 hours from Berlin, we decided to go to Leipzig (only an hour and a half) instead. Karnival is a festival that takes place in most German cities at this time of year, where people dress up, there's parades and music, and most importantly lots of drinking and partying. Well, when we arrived in Leipzig on Sunday afternoon (that is Mischa and I, our friends from Ireland Nikki and Tori and the amazing Alice from Oxford, who is definitly my best friend over here), the parade had nearly finished. But we still got a good glance at what ... read more

Geo: 51.3397, 12.3713I had trouble sleeping and woke up at 5:30 ... I just lay in bed awhile. I have this terrible habit of not being able to sleep when things bother me. It's irritating!!! The church bells went off at 6 AM and didn't stop for over 5 minutes. It's a good thing I wasn't sleeping anyway. I showered and packed up to leave. Mary woke up just as I was leaving - I gave her a hug, thanked her again for listening last night, and said goodbye once more. I hope she makes it back to Canada safely. It's weird being alone now, after being with someone 24/7 for a month. But I need some solitude right now - just me and the tunes on my iPod. Again, it's like that thing can read ... read more

What a quaint little airport Altenburg is, if indeed it can even be called that. As the planes wheels touched down, I searched amongst the forest for a building that would resemble a terminal, and finally spotted a small shed-like building! The luggage conveyor was about 2m long each way, so you had to be quick to get your bag before it disappears again! Craig and Andrew collected me on their way to Chemnitz where they were doing the beach boys act at a bank's gala function. Wow, they're brilliant! And was so nice to see them live! Spent the next day exploring Leipzig with Craig, including attending a German theatre, where everyone from trapese artists, acrobats, magicians and a drag queen did their performance in the setting of a salon. Quite different. Cant say ... read more

June 18, 2006 The train departed the Constance train station at around 11:30--my brother and I had just missed the 10:30 train by seconds, so we had to wait. We were on our way to Leipzig, about eight hours away with all the connections, for the France-Korea game. We soon realized we weren't going to be able to make the game on time unless we figured out a plan to put our bags somewhere before the game without much time being wasted in Leipzig. The train arrived into Leipzig 20 minutes before the game started. The trip had several stops and change of trains, so we soon made a plan to leave the bags in Offenburg, the stop with the longest amount of time between trains. The ride was beautiful, passing through the hills of the ... read more
