this must be short (really) - just to summarise getting out of D'dorf and where I am now (which is Koblenz). I have attached a few snaps of my last sunny Sunday afternoon in D'dorf - it was glorious (apart from the art indoors - can I just say that Joseph Beuys (conceptual artist) is an absolute tosser and I refuse to recognise his own self-important significance - TG the K20 gallery had some decent early 20C painting - Klee, Kandisky etc, to make up for his nonsense downstairs!) As you can see Dorfers love a sunny Sunday to sit in the sun and drink bier (as I did too, hopping onto a moored boat for one - see pix)- as it is getting colder by the day and soon the weather will no doubt go to cabbage (let me leave first tho pls!).

Some Thirsty Swagman Aussie and other young chaps/chapettes were at the hotel - making a racket in the suburban street at 1.30am last night they were too - givin' Aussies a bad name. However one of them gave me some good general tips on going up the Rhine. So today got the train from D'dorf to

a Citroen DS21 - a recent classic from c.1957
Koln - which is only 20 mins on an IC train - walk out of the station and you hardly need a street directory to find the Dom/cathedral - the largest cathedral in Germany is like 50m away - ideal for "you can't miss it". Apart from the huge size not all that impressed with interior after seeing so many churches - would take Trier over this one any day. An hour there and bag in a locker at rail - then on for an hour or so to Koblenz which is a major ferry spot for the section up the Rhine to Mainz. Booking.com listed the Hotel National - but I came here directly without a booking to give them the money rather than 5E to the Net site. With the Lonely Planet booked by my mobile phone (on Vodafone roam at some ferocious rate but it can be convenient for this sort of thing) my next hotel in St Goar 3 hrs up river - only 32E a nite- Koblenz here is 45E.

On recc. of hotel man for a good local diner in Koblenz went to Dubrovnik resto tonite - not surprisingly of the Balkan

type. A good Sarajevo skewer (half pork, half beef) with pepper gravy, veges, fried potatoes and salad - good honest feed for about 20AUD - and a nice drinking 20cl of red wine for 3E.

Koln - Heilige Gheist!
Hi Michael enjoy that sunshine! You mustn't think ill of us you after all have set the pace with the near daily blogs with great photos. Did you get to have a look at the museum under Koln cathedral? Some great Roman stuff, mosaic floor, jewellery, reconstructured carriage, etc. Once again brought back memories. Hope you enjoyed your trip along the Rhine. Rudesheim is a lovely little village with a wine museum no less. Take care Melita
