Coal, steel and rust This blog entry is going to be the last one we publish from our trip in Germany in 2022. The sites it covers chronologically both belong in the first week or so of our trip, not in the end. But hopefully nobody who reads this care about that. To us it makes more sense to put them together in one blog for a few other reasons. Those reasons are mainly => They are UNESCO world heritage sites => They are large photogenic sites - hence we want to publish many photos from each site. When we want to publish a lot of pictures of one site we prefer to do it in a separate blog entry. => The sites are in many ways quite similar. Both are large industry sites that have ... read more

For me, board games have always been a social endeavour. I started out playing as a way to hang out with my friends. I carried it on as a way to meet more people, always preferring games that are full of interactions, dialogues and (hopefully friendly) negotiating. Living in New Zealand, the biggest convention that I had attended was about 150 people, where we got together and just played games for 2 days straight. When I heard about Essen, there was something about the size and scale of the event that my mind didn’t really comprehend. Two hundred THOUSAND people under one roof to mingle over board games seemed like the ultimate social board gaming experience. Accommodation preparation I knew that my ideal Essen trip would need to be with a group of other fun social ... read more

Oberhausen and Essen Germany 24 September 2014 On the advice of the German couple who we parked next to in Duisburg, we decided to visit the tallest Gasometer in Germany. Inside the gasometer, it has been transformed into an art gallery. For the exhibition "The Appearance of Beauty" the artists' group URBANSCREEN have transformed the Gasometer space into one of the largest multimedia art works ever seen. Over a radius of 320 degrees, we viewed a fantastic graphic pattern growing and changing along the 100 metre high inner wall: a continuously changing play of light somewhere between a real and virtual spatial experience. We laid on the bean bags that were provided, and watched the light display. We then caught a lift up to the ceiling and looked at the light display from a different angle. ... read more

On me demandait "Pis?

Everyone knows that public transport in Germany is the definition of perfection itself. Despite a comment in my first blog, trains are very rarely late in this part of the world (unless they are trains to my climbing gym - could this be a sign?). But my favourite part of the Deutsche Bahn are the so called Landestickets - tickets that allow you unlimited travel within one of the German federal states for 24 hours. These are often the cheapest way to travel, as long as you are travelling within the borders of the state - a rule that made me slightly regret being based in Nordrhein-Westfalen at first, a state with neither the most beautiful cities, nor the cheapest Landestickets. Unlike all other German states, where such a ticket costs 20 Euros for a single ... read more

C'est ... read more
