Blogs from Duisburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Europe
So folks, interesting week in Germany. We drove from Switzerland towards Stuttgart where Ina and Noel, friends from Uni were staying on holiday. Spent two nights at Ina's parents enjoying huge amounts of food then had to leave or we would be rolling home. Next stop Amsterdam. Noel came with us for a road trip...but we made it to Duisburg when Dan heard a rumbling noise from the front passenger tyre. He knows when something isn't right and got us off the autobarn ASAP. Unfortunatly for us it was a Saturday afternoon ad everything was shut! Hung around and explored the imediate area untill Monday where we found a Turkish Mechanic who aggreed to help us. Lucky for us it is Ramadan at the moment and part of the religion is that you dont refuse anyone ... read more
Enzyme Incubation at Turbinenhalle
Published: March 9th 2009Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » DuisburgSo we went to our first event overseas called “Enzyme Incubation”, a celebration of all things Enzyme Records so I was happy to be going to this so early in our adventure. Let me set the scene for you...it’s about 9pm at night, there are giantically tall german “gabbers” everywhere - some decked out in camo army pants, bomber jackets, at least half of them are skinheads (this is girls included), smashing their beer bottles on the ground just for the fun of it...and we had to follow them to the event because we weren’t sure where to go. Oh my gosh, I was so scared! The venue was called Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen...it looks like a warehouse converted club/concert hall...it’s massive for a club but a small-ish venue for a concert. We had VIP tickets so ... read more
Fahrgäste in Duisburg
Published: October 24th 2008Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » DuisburgDuisburg/Deutschland, 30-11-2007. The overnight train from Warsaw to Duitsburg had a 70 min. delay which suits me fine because it means a full hour off the waiting time for my conexion to Amsterdam, still three hours to kill here in Duisburg, though. Arriving at Duisburg I was actually quite surprised at the enormous amount of Fahrgaeste - commuters, you know. - running to catch their train. I feel like I am in a chicken house that has been invaded by a fox with the chicken running wildly in absolute despair. I watch this crazy mayhem for a while before entering a small cafeteria for a cup of hot coffee. Outside the station I see the pigeon population of Duisburg waking up to a slight rain. Are they off better than those commuters I saw just minutes ... read more
Sturzelburg = Duisberg, 66.56kms, Total 2167.44kms, Ride time 3'58"" I'm not sure what to make of today, there was no rain for a change last night, and we woke to Blue Skies, however my backside felt like it had knives in it for the first 10kms, and it was hard to get into the mood of the day. At about the 15km mark, I managed to take the wrong turn to Dusseldorf, so we ended up crosing the Rhein and heading directly into town, rather than crossing it on the other side. Christie and I had a bit of a spat in Dusseldorf, just one of those one small thing lead to the other things, to be honest it all started with hre water bottle falling off her bike I think, and escalated to her ... read more
I have been pretty lucky in terms of housemates, last year in Melbourne I lived with some cool as Koreans who taught me how to make Sushi, other Korean dishes and generally respect other people's space. Granted there was one whom I nicknamed "Shit Cunt" for being exactly that, but she was moved on quickly. Since moving to Germany I had to find myself an apartment in this wonderful town of Duisburg (read with dripping sarcasm) and stumbled upon one in a suburb called Meiderich, which is the spiritual home of MSV Duisburg (Meidericher Sport Verein). Anyways, there were 3 people living here before I arrived and they are 3 of the coolest mofo's around. Markus the Pot Smoker and Duisburg enthusiast: He is jsut short of 40 but when you meet him you would never ... read more
