So we went to our first event overseas called “Enzyme Incubation”, a celebration of all things Enzyme Records so I was happy to be going to this so early in our adventure.
Let me set the scene for you...it’s about 9pm at night, there are giantically tall german “gabbers” everywhere - some decked out in camo army pants, bomber jackets, at least half of them are skinheads (this is girls included), smashing their beer bottles on the ground just for the fun of it...and we had to follow them to the event because we weren’t sure where to go. Oh my gosh, I was so scared!
The venue was called Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen...it looks like a warehouse converted club/concert hall...it’s massive for a club but a small-ish venue for a concert.
We had VIP tickets so we went through the back entrance and got VIP t-shirts, they didn’t have small for me though. 😊 They had a VIP deck with free food, fruit and our own bar where we could watch the mainstage. EVERYONE freakin’ smoked inside the venue so it was nice to get away from it all in the VIP area.
The VIP area was also where
a lot of DJ’s were coming to watch the mainstage. They don’t get hassled by people over here as much as bands/DJ’s would in Australia so you see a lot of them just walking around. There were so many DJ’s walking around that Smicy and me only went up to a few, lol it was crazyyyy.
Only really bad thing about the night was it actually started at 8pm. We thought it started at 10pm...therefore I missed Prowler grrr. I was really looking forward to his set...oh well...who knew they would have a 12 hour party?
We started off in Area 3 watching the “skinheads” dance around. I think skinheads started out as a subculture that was influenced by the whole British Mod scene (thanks Wikipedia) and then I think politics and racial issues started to be a part of the scene too. Although, I think the ones at Enzyme just shaved their heads for fashion reasons - they were crazy though! They would pull funny faces, knock on each others heads and twirl each other around...it was pretty entertaining.
Endymion LIVE on mainstage was amazing. There’s 3 guys involved in the live act and they were
Mad Dog & Anime
TAKEN FROM PARTYFLOCK.NL BY SUNNY4YA running around like crazy with Enzyme & Endymion flags. They threw lots of merch out but we didn’t catch any. I had a big dance to their set while Smicy got lots of footage. Far out, they are so passionate about what they do, which makes it all the more awesome to watch them.
We found Ophidian wandering around Area 3 looking a bit stressed. I was too scared to talk so Smicy asked if he could take a pic of us. We inadvertedly seemed to have caused heaps of people to do the same and poor Ophidian was looking a bit lost!
Soon after we went to watch Enzyme X play in Area 3. Enzyme X is an alias that all producers can make tracks under annonomously. This is an awesome concept because artists generally produce realllyyyy different stuff under Enzyme X to what they normally do. When Enzyme X plays at an event, it can be any DJ from Enzyme...tonight it was Ophidian + Ruffneck + Miss Twlight!!@!!!1!!!!!! Ahhhh! Ophidian was stressed because Ruffneck was running late. We went up to the barrier to watch. This set was a perfect showcase of Enzyme’s finest tracks, not
Gabbers!
TAKEN FROM PARTYFLOCK.NL BY SUNNY4YA to mention really mad technical skill shown from their mixing. Ruffneck is CRAZY and Ophidian gets all hyper around him, it was an honor to watch them play together.
After the set, we went up to the front barrier in Area 1 to watch Ophidian LIVE. Ophidian LIVE is especially different from other acts because he plays his piano samples from his songs live. They had a camera filming him and played it on the big screens so you could see everything he was doing. As always, Ophidian brought the goods hehe.
Fact: The speakers were shaking so much in Area 2 that they needed to tie down the speakers to try and stop them. I was actually really worried about my hearing by the end of the night.
At some point after this we met Tha Playah on the VIP deck. Smic has a big crush on him. They chatted for a while about events over here and they both made each other super happy. He seems like a really nice guy, which is funny considering his tracks are sooo creepy and rude lol.
Synapse and Sei2ure stood next to Smic for about 20 minutes
Endymion LIVE
TAKEN FROM PARTYFLOCK.NL BY SUNNY4YA but I was too shy/too exhausted to ask them for a picture. Then we saw Ruffneck and stalked him down the stairs. As you can see from our pictures, he is SO nice. He gave me 3 kisses and a big hug. 😊 Ruffneck started Enzyme so this was a big deal. Once again, Smicy had a big chat with him because he is good at that!
By this time we were EXHAUSTED so we left at 5:30am. I really didn’t want to leave but we were falling asleep. The next day we slept and ate kebabs + chicken. Yay for fun times and for Enzyme. 😊 😊 😊
Smic:
Enzyme was awesome.... but tiring. It was our first event and I could really feel it in my old bones hehe. Bee Bee summed it up really well, except for a few biased opinions. Ophidian, when cornered by us for a photo seemed really impressed and happy when I told him we had travelled all the way from Aus for these parties =) Ruffneck was over the moon! He said he loves Australian's and was so stoked that we had travelled so far for his party and
Pretty
TAKEN FROM PARTYFLOCK.NL BY SUNNY4YA he nearly fell over when I showed him Bee's Enzyme tattoo on her back =), he had to be the nicest person I've met so far on our travels. We chatted for ages and he seemed really keen to discuss the parties and music with me and wasnt trying to quickly pawn me off after we had taken our photo. Tha Playah was awesome!!!! He is one of my favourite deejays and I couldnt believe it when we bumped into him, haha I actually got Bee to walk past him again just to make sure it was him before I went up to him. Once again I couldnt believe how nice and welcoming he was =). All in all it was an awesome party, even though we had to leave early because we were so exhausted! It was the perfect warm up to the next 5 months of parties we have planned!
