Tale of Two Parties. One Classy, One not so Much

I have finally started feeling like I am getting use to living in my new town of Remscheid. I have been going to school now for about a month and that schedule seem to be feeling more normal. What better way to celebrate adjusting to a schedule than going to a couple of fun parties.

One Classy

When I first started at the University of Wuppertal I had heard that every year they have a Uni Ball. A couple of people in my program were really excited about the idea but I wasn’t sold. The Uni Ball was the first weekend in November and I was convinced it would be a nice time. I figured I needed a date to our German Prom, so I called my friend in Dusseldorf and invited her to go with me. I went out and bought a suit, new shirt and tie. We all decided it would be fun to go to dinner before the ball. The five of us met up for pasta at a place in Wuppertal. We ate and headed for the ball that was being held at the Historic Stadthalle in Wuppertal. The place was absolutely beautiful outside and even more gorgeous inside. We were absolutely shocked at how fancy the place was. It has a casino room and multiple dance rooms most with live bands. A couple of my friends are in the choir at Wuppertal so we enjoyed their concert in the main ball room. We listened to the swing band and enjoyed seeing our professors there dancing it up. We ended the night dancing in the main dance room with a tile painting behind the bar. It really was an absolutely amazing time and I was very glad that I went and got to enjoy the beautiful building and crazy stories of my German Prom.

One not so Much

So every year in February the Germans around the Rheine River have a crazy party that last for days called Karneval. Since February is still a couple months away they decide every year to have a kick off to the party on November 11th at 11:11am. This party is just like Karnenval with crazy costumes but only last for the day. So I went to my classes on Tuesday like normal and a couple of friends called and told me to get to Cologne as soon as I was done. So once my class ended at 2pm I headed for Cologne, Germany. It was absolutely crazy I have never seen so many crazy costumes and weird people in my life. It was really entertaining to see and we had a really great time. Many people really go all out and many groups even do matching costumes. It was really funny to be hanging out and see Hulk Hogan go by and then Darth Vader. It was like Halloween during the day. We met some really interesting people and had fun just taking in the craziness that is 11/11.
I have a lot of fun getting to know the people that are around my new home. We have about 12 people from my program that are scattered around North Rheine Westphalia. The time is really going by quickly and I can’t believe that Christmas is almost a month away. I hope that everyone is doing well and have a great Thanksgiving.
