Preparation is half the work they say, and as my wife comes from Germany we are in the "ticking the boxes" week before our trip starts.... We came from a pretty relaxing week in Italy, where as you might know we got married. We understood perfectly where Fellini ( for those of you trapped in the generation gap a link has been attached ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federico_Fellini got all his inspiration for those wonderful Italian films, the people, in this case the Italian people, beautiful country side, small charming villages full of Italians. In Glasgow they say "people make Glasgow", well, in Italy it is no different, definitely the Italians' divine comedy is present every day, even in church ( I finally got my precious German lady to be on time and guess who came too late, yep, the ... read more

Sunday 5 July 2015 After the party it is time to move on. Today our destination is Hannover. It is probably worth a visit but for us on this trip it is halfway to our next top destination, the Mosel (Moselle) Valley. After our four nights in Berlin we packed the car, started the engine, and asked Polly to take us West. The 10 o'clock temperature was 30. Thank heavens for air conditioning in the car. Leaving Berlin seemed to be straight forward, much easier than we imagined. That is until we were directed to turn right. Yes you guessed it. The road was closed. We had to trick our friend and find an alternative because she doesn't give up easily. Interesting that roads are closed and no alternatives are given. At least in France there ... read more

Geo: 52.3721, 9.73569It's 6am when the alarm goes off. It takes awhile for Mom to get ready plus she has to fix my breakfast. I'm not leaving any of this food behind. We always shower and pre-pack the night before so it's easier in the morning. We must catch the 9:01am train to Hannover, Germany. It's an express train. We don't have to change trains anywhere and it's 4 hrs to our destination. If we miss it, the next is 3 different trains and 6 hrs so it's important we make it. With breakfast and final packing out of the way, we bundle up, drop the keys in the slot and make our way to the station. I've set aside a half hour to make the 10 minute walk and we arrive about 7:20am. We head ... read more

Yet another crack of dawn flight meant I landed in a near tropical Hannover by mid-morning. Getting the train to the main station it was only 5 minutes’ walk to my hotel and I could check in despite it being so early. The room was a dump and with no air con and a window that opened about 1 centimetre, it was going to be a very unpleasant sleep. I got a map and set off to make the most of the day and see the city. However, despite Hannover having a humongous train station with approximately 70 places to eat (all selling sausages of some variety and bread) the rest of the city had nothing to offer. In fact Hannover is literally the most boring German city I have been to… and believe me that ... read more

Geo: 52.3721, 9.73569Today was our last in the Netherlands, though we wouldn't be leaving the country alone. We organized to take a living souvenir with us on a temporary basis. Not kidnapping, but an arrangement for my cousin Marielle to join us for a week in Germany. We woke, had breakfast and packed our things. We left Jonathan's beer glass and bunch of souvenirs behind with the Vonks for postal to Australia (Mum and Dad, expect another package). It was time for another goodbye. We had really enjoyed our time in Heteren with Jan and Joke. We really enjoyed their company and appreciated all the kind hospitality.Again, we caught the train from Ede to Amsterdam. We met Marielle and boarded a train bound for Germany. It was a long ride. Two trains; the first was just ... read more

Rail travel in Germany is fairly similar to England but take note that if you use the ticket machines and select all travel but not ICE then you need to find the local train travel desk (near reservieen) who will print out your details (stations changes/times/platforms/train number). The yellow train timetable (fahrplan) displayed is for 'fast' trains only (ICE etc). It is cheaper to book over the Internet but i've yet to try this out myself and know what you do. I'll find out. My slow train to Hamburg had me stopping at some little known villages/small towns. If this happens then go out and look around. I was delighted with seeing Verden (Aller) with its charming cobbled side streets. A real treat before I headed in the city of Hamburg. Travel books write about Hamburg ... read more

Hannover From Venice we flew to Amsterdam, changed planes and then had another 40 minute flight to Hannover. Was I excited? Dad said that everybody on the plane knew that I was excited. We were going to stay with our friends who lived near us in Brunswick when they were on a working holiday in Australia. They now live back in Germany and I had not seen Linus and Julika for 7 years. The three of us were great friends then when we were all under 4 years of age. I was excited about seeing them and I was also sort of nervous. Would they remember me, would they still like me and would they understand me? I only know a few words in German, Yes, No, numbers 1 to ten, Please, Thank You. Mum and ... read more

When we arrived in Hannover and left the train station we thought we were going a bit crazy because we could hear strange echoey music and it sounded like it was coming out the drains. We later figured out that radio music was coming out of vents/speakers within the light poles. Very weird! After we dumped our bags and headed out for a walk. It started absolutely POURING down! Luckily we stumbled upon a fete which was just packing up but the beer and food stands were still open. Huddling under the beer stand was the perfect setting for our first German sausage and beer! We were introduced to currywurst and have since become great friends! It’s a bratwurst with curry powder and tomato sauce - yum! When the rain eased we had a wander around ... read more
