Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Layover in Frankfurt Europe » Germany » Hessen » Frankfurt
Frankfurt was a pleasant surprise. I arrived at the airport and took the S-bahn into the city, to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). I had a few hours before the train, so I left the luggage in a locker (costs 2 Euroes, near McDonald's) and went for a walk. The neighborhood right in front of the station was a bit seedy, with a lot of strip clubs and XXX movie theaters, but I didn't feel unsafe in any way. On the other hand, it was on Sunday during the day. The old town was surprisingly close. There were shops set up [View Full Entry]

The Allies are back! Europe » Germany » Hessen » Frankfurt
The Allies are back! Frankfurt has been a breath of fresh air after our 11 day tour of Russia. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoyed my time in both St Petersburg and Moscow; I could spend a great deal longer further experiencing the history and culture of Russia, as well as the approaching minus degree Celsius temperatures, however, for a first time visit, a change of pace was definitely welcomed after the 11th day. Little things like having to carry your passport around you at all times whilst in Russia slowly became more like having a ball and chain [View Full Entry]

Thats how I was greeted by the Immigration officer in Frankfurt. After first disembarking from the plane, there were police at the gates asking to check everyone's passports. Seeing an Australian passport we were waved through, they only seemed concerned were the Russian ones. Last stop and one I was definately looking forward to was Frankfurt, after spending some time there at the end of my trip last time. With not so much time, and even less after a 3hr delay in Moscow we hit the ground running, booking two tours, one a day trip to the Rhine River the next [View Full Entry]

Frankfurt (4)

So, I'm spending another night in Frankfurt, and making another 400 euros. I spent the day just wandering around Frankfurt, following some tourist map (more or less). You can look at the pictures, but to be honest, Frankfurt is pretty boring. Tomorrow's flights are overbooked as well, but I think it's time to come home (unless they make me an offer I can't refuse). [View Full Entry]

I made it safely to the Frankfurt airport after quite a delay in Chicago. I have so much to talk about already, I've met some nice people along the way and made connections for when I stay in Germany. On the plane ride from Seattle to Chicago I sat next to Jens, a 22 year old German who was finishing up his 4 week holiday in America. We talked about the sights, the people and how Europeans and Americans are different yet the same. He said that Seattle reminded him of a European city, very much. He and I are going [View Full Entry]

Trip to Frankfurt YEA!!! We slept in! That was really nice. We staggered down the stairs in groups. Lee and I were in the middle of the pack. Will came in last. Ate breakfast, got dressed to go to Frankfurt for the day. It was decided that we'd take the train as it would be easier than finding a parking space in Frankfurt. Annya led us to the train station; we had to wait just a bit for the train and off we went. We were like little kids when we got off the train. Wow! Look at that! Take a [View Full Entry]

Friday, Germany Day 2 Europe » Germany » Hessen » Frankfurt
Friday, Germany Day 2 First, we really aren't in Frankfurt ... we're in Rodgau, but just a 30 minute train ride to Frankfurt. No rest for the wicked!!! We’re out of the house at 7:45. Breakfast was served at the pow wow grounds. We get the eat free!!! Now that’s a good thing for a bunch of Indians!!! We were served the typical German breakfast: bread, cold cuts, cheese, butter, something like Miracle Whip. And coffee. The coffee was good. And, hey, it was free!!! After breakfast, we went to work setting up many canopies that belong to Tdom Bah. I [View Full Entry]
