Arrived into Frankfurt early evening and made our way to our hotel which is in Meinz, about 45 minutes away from central Frankfurt. Some of my colleagues and I decided on going out for something to eat and drink. We walked down little cobblestoned streets to the main centre only five minutes away. As soon as we got there we noticed a couple of people wearing fancy dress which was a bit of a laugh! But strangely we started seeing more and more people and full on fancy dress complete with face paint. We couldn't figure out what was going on, we thought maybe there was a party at one of the bars. The further we walked the crazier it became, we were starting to feel like we were the only ones who weren't dressed up. We asked around as to what was going on to which we found out that Germany was celebrating 'carnival' their annual week-long celebration. And how do they celebrate it, by dressing up and partying for a week....sounds good to me!!!
We stopped and had something to eat, there wasn't many places open but there were a few stalls selling hot dogs. I decided seeing
as im in Frankfurt i should try out their Frankfurter hot dogs. Turned out they were much bigger and was pretty hard to eat without getting it all over you...or maybe that was just me! We tried getting into a couple of bars, but our chances weren't good. They were fully packed with people dancing up on tables. After waiting outside in the freezing cold we decided to move on and find something else.
We found a mellow little bar with only a few people inside so we went in, there wasn't much happening there but thought at least we could get something to eat and drink. Well, within half an hour the bar was fully packed and pumping, it had a great atmosphere. The music was really cool, there were a few songs we knew which we sang along to and then they started playing german rock music. Of course we couldn't speak a word of german but that wasn't going to stop us. Everyone else was singing and having a great old time so we thought we should get into it! So we started singing along to the chorus which was pretty easy as it was very
repetitive, arms in the air shouting at the top of our lungs and then of course when the next verse came along we all went really quiet as we didn't know any words, as soon as the chorus came on again we all started singing at the top of our lungs!! It was great fun and the other people in there were well impressed that we were getting into it. The pub had such a great atmosphere! Everyone looked like they were having a ball. They had obviously gone to a lot of time and effort with their fancy dress costumes and must have spent hours getting themselves ready.
We were all having a great time and then a group of five really hot guys walked in dressed as pimps in big fur coats and aviators with cowboy hats. Ive always had a weakness for german boys so ended up hanging out with them for a while. They were all really nice, two of them had lived in sydney just up the road from my parents. A while later the bar tender was holding up my bag and asked if it belonged to me. I couldn't figure out what
she was doing with it. She told me that it had been found outside. We had left our bags behind the table we had been sitting at but as i had been distracted by the pimps and my colleagues were up dancing, someone had obviously taken it. I checked to see if anything was missing, my phone and wallet was still in there. But i realised all my cash had been taken, around $250 US. I was so relieved that i hadn't left my camera in my bag. Luckily i had it in my pocket. It is one thing to lose money but i would have been more gutted if it had been my camera and losing all my pictures which is irreplaceable. When that kind of thing happens there is not much you can do and seeing as i was having such a great time, there was no point letting it ruin my night.
