Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Week 2 of 2 of boredom. Can't wait for a week from today- school starts, and I'll have a life once more! I don't know if I said this before, but I did decide that the twice per week at night B2 class at Colon was fine for me. A bit challenging, but what's the point if it isn't I guess. But despite this I still have many gaps in my schedule, and the rain doesn't help! So I went on over to Europe Passage by Jungfernstieg and they have a bookstore called Thalia's. They have a great English section with [View Full Entry]

So today was the beginning of 2 weeks of boredom! Today I did get a lot done, like grocery shopping and laundry, and I did start my night class at Colon. I am so relieved that I like that class sooo much better than my old one. My teacher is actually one of the sub's we had last week while my teacher was out sick, and he was my fave! Older guy, really nice and smiley. He loves asking me about Jersey, its cute. I walked into class and was so happy! It proves that a different teacher can make all [View Full Entry]

    Oh Bryan
Oh Bryan
I told him to squeeze the air out of it, but he wouldn't listen. Schade.
Tonight we had, what we now call, International food night. Everyone made something from their own country and we all ate... alot. We had American, Italian, Chinese, and French Wine. Potatoes with horseradish (Bryan found out Pferd was not in the name of the spice.. haha), Bruschetta, Sloppy Joes, Dumplings, apple pie.. and then of course the French wine. Very nice. We all had a lot of fun cooking (and eating) together and actually, they are all still out in the living room talking and drinking. I, on the other hand, am cursed with a conscience and must study for my [View Full Entry]

Hey all! I know it has been a few days, but I had a fun and busy weekend!! Friday night I stayed in, but had to be in bed early because saturday morning, Joe and I had plans for a zoo weekend. We went to Hagenbecks Tierpark here in Hamburg. Saturday we went to the zoo part and it was alot of fun! I haven't been to a zoo in ages so it was different, but great. Lots of animal babies, they were sooo cute! We were there for hours and then came back to chill out. We hung out with [View Full Entry]

Ooook so I'm not a big fan of valentines day. But it wasn't bad, at all! This morning I reluctantly rolled out of bed, went to class, and that was boring as usual. I was so bored, I guess it showed because the sub kept grilling me, and I was never paying attention, so that made class ultra interesting. Its stuff I learned last year... so I just zoned out. Then, the next teacher came in, and gave us a worksheet on simple past tense. We had to form 20 sentences with the info provided, and use the simple past tense [View Full Entry]

Our Interrail passes included travel on the S-bahn trains as well which was very cool.
Hamburg is the most northerly city that we will visit on our trip and we're pretty happy about that as it was starting to get very cold. After finding our hostel, which had the worst signage ever, we walked along the Elbmeile where they have put fake beaches along the shores of the river. From here we could see the busy port which has made Hamburg rich and we also walked past the famous St Pauli Fishmarket which is held every Sunday. It's apparently huge and has been running for 200 years but we won't get to tell you as we'll [View Full Entry]

Ok, so Joe took this stalkery picture, but it is true; if you cant find me, try Jungferstieg by the water. 99% chance I'll be there.
So by now, I am hearing "Zurueck bleiben bitte" in my sleep, as I'm sure many Germans do. For those who don't know, this recording plays on the UBahn right before the doors close. It means, "Stay back, please" so some stupid person doesnt go and get himself stuck in the doors when they close.. i dont know. In other news... well, nothing really new. I stayed in last night and studied for awhile, watched a movie, then went to bed. For dinner, I tried Kartoffelnsuppe from a can... and it was actually pretty good! Gonna have to stock up. I [View Full Entry]

Hey all, its been an interesting couple of days. Friday morning was usual- school, test(which more than half the class failed... i hate going there... grr) Anyways, after that it got a little better. I went to get some socks (haha) at this sports store in Gaensemarkt passage which is awesome.. then I caught the train home and took a nap. Later on I met Joe and we met up in Jungfernstieg to get dinner and walk around. We went back to Karstadt, naturally, and then out to dinner in Gaensemarkt Passage. We ate at this steak place.. and it was [View Full Entry]

Tonight will be an early night. I went to class this morning as usual, then straight home to go to campus and print out my important documents for the insurance people and the Einwohnermeldeamt. The print shop was sooo hard to find, but ended up right next door to the main building... I went nuts for nothing. I got there and had no problem printing everything I needed, then went back to the dorm to fill out the forms and take a quick nap. This didnt last long. About 15 mins after I laid down, Stephen (our buddy) called and said [View Full Entry]

For the english speakers out there, my title means shopping success. I definetely was successful tonight; but first, a recap of my day. Feeling anxious? Woke up, went to class as usual. It was raining this morning, which was not cool, but as I've come to learn about Hamburg, the weather changes very often. An hour into class the sun was coming out, and I was very happy. I was having umbrella issues, which made matters a little worse. After class I walked down to Jungfernstieg instead of going home by way of Gaensemarkt. It is so beautiful and I just [View Full Entry]
