Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Another weekend away... It was a long weekend, and so (like every other Aussie who lives in London) Bel and I felt that we needed to take the opportunity to explore a new country. I'd never been to Germany, and that, combined with the fact we could find decently priced flights, determined that we would go visit Hamburg. Hello all, Sorry it's been so long, since the last update, but we have had difficulties finding computers and finding the time to get down to this. We left Katrina in Denmark on April 28, and headed south into Germany. As soon as we hit Germany, we saw hills! Morning: Construction sounds again at 8am!! God, these people get to work so early!! Slept late last nite and got woken up by them again. Today the kids go to their kindergarten and we will take a walk around Hamburg ourselves. Simone's Apartment 1

Morning: Got woken up by lots of sounds, the construction work upstairs, the kids talking and people walking outside the house. What a lively place! The view of the harbor from our youth hostel was incredibly pretty when it wasn't raining!

Through the program that I studied with for the semester we traveled as a group on a weeklong excursion first to Hamburg and then to Copenhagen, Denmark. The first three days were spent in Hamburg, which is only an hour and a half away from Berlin by train, and as Germany’s second largest city (after Berlin) and Germany’s largest port city (although, since Germany isn’t exactly surrounded by water, the power of the statistic is questionable) it is a very interesting and busy industrial harbor city.
