Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Berlin
Berlin
The largest remaining section of the famous Berlin Wall
Today Cam and I hired some bikes, which Im sure is the best way to see Berlin. Its amazingly big and a fantastic place to visit. So rich in history, I love it because every where I turn there is something I have learnt about and it makes it all the more special and interesting. The WWII stuff is really where my interests lie, Im just not into art and churches.. We rode to the largest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, separating east from west and got a few pictures there. It is covered in Graffiti as Berlin in one [View Full Entry]

en route to Kaiserslautern for USA Italy
Hi. Lots of running around, lots of soccer and finally some time to breath! I haven't written since Prague because I've been in intense soccer travel mode! I went Prague - Nuremburg - Kaiserslautern - Frankfurt - Munich - Rostock - Lubeck - Hamburg since! And each in one and two day increments, so it's been INTENSE! Tomorrow things will start to be a little bit more chilled out. I fly back to Zagreb to see Zvon and have 8 days undefined there where I intend on resting and perhaps making way to the coast for a handful of days before [View Full Entry]

We have decided to split the Germany blog into two parts. This one will cover our time spent in Glückstadt, ours visits to Hamburg, Travemünde and Lübeck. The second blog, which should be sent out this coming Monday, will cover our night spent in Düsseldorf and our day trip up to Westerland on the Island of Sylt. Glückstadt, Hamburg, Travemünde and Lübeck We were in Germany for a total of 10 sunny days. Our base for the trip was Susanne and Walter’s (Kai’s Dad) place in the picturesque town of Glückstadt. 6:20am isn’t the best time in the morning to be woken up by your alarm any day of the week, and this was a Saturday... What the heck were we thinking? Miniature Wunderland was our mission for the day, and that involved a 70 minute wait for slackers who go there any later than 10am. So our fate had been decided - wake up at the crack of dawn, race to the train station, board the train to Hamburg (the untravelled land - so far) and find this so called 'Wonderland'. 9:50am we were assured that we only had a 10 [View Full Entry]

Andy and I at the Harbour Birthday
Andy and I at the Harbour Birthday
Andy is another Airbus praktikant and is lucky enought (or unlucky as some would argue) to share an office with me and he was our host for the weekend in Hamburg and let us crash at his place. Thanx ... [more]
I picked the best weekend to see Hamburg because the weekend I went was the Hamburg Harbor Birthday so there was a huge festival and they had all sort of ship displays on the water but the highlight of the Birthday celebrations was the tug boat ballet. It was quite funny watching these completely ungraceful boats moving to classical music. (well the bits I could see because of all those tall people standing in front of me). And in typical German fair fashion, every second stall was a beer stall and every third a sausage stall! Steve, Paulina and I left [View Full Entry]

We began our German trip by venturing into mountains into thick snow and mist (reminded us of the High Sierras last year) before dropping down into Baden Baden, about which Eugene Guinot said in 1845 “….In Europe there are two capitals, Paris for the winter and Baden Baden for the summer”. We could understand his sentiments and what a place to start our exploration of Germany. We stayed the night and spent the next morning wandering through the picturesque town before driving to Heidelberg. As we entered Germany just above the Swiss border and were to meet our friend Tors [View Full Entry]

Unsere letzten Tage haben wir erneut bei Marta und Ricardo in Bs. As. verbracht. Viimeiset päivät vietimme Buenos Airesissa Marthan ja Ricardon luona. Aika kului "pakollisen" shoppailun merkeissä ;O) Niinpä niin, matka ohi. Nyt olemme palanneet Hampuriin ja arki jatkuu. The weather was pretty cold but im kind of getting used to it now and its not AS cold when its snowing which is cool! To get to our hotel we had to get 2 gondolas(not like the ones in Venice) to the top. The first one took about 30mins then we got off and then onto another one that took about 5mins. The hotel itself was pretty basic but the views were AMAZING!!!!!!!! [View Full Entry]
