Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Out walking with Tante Elke

In this post, I’ll be visiting the heritage from the German side of my family. I was born in South Africa to a German mother and an Australian father. Living in Australia makes my Australian heritage easy to see, and with visit, the German side of the story is filled in. Inside the Hauptbahnhof (main station)

The trip to Hamburg involved our first experience travelling on a high speed train. In this case we were travelling on a high speed ICE train. The person at Heidelberg station recommended we book a seat as it might be full. We did this and ended up with our own 6 seat compartment to ourselves as the train wasn't full at all. Kerrie liked this as it meant she could not only listen to the Ipod but sing to the music as well. (The experience was therefore not quite so good for Ross.) My Plane
The MD-11 I was on from Hong Kong to Helsinki. Not the best of planes.

Getting here So, to start my sojourn into the European landscape I had to sit on some planes for a while... In the name of getting cheap tickets, frequent flyer miles and a flexible return date my flights involved more stops than I would have liked but in the end it all proved to be an interesting experience. Hello, finally the weather in Germany has turned around and instead of clammy and cold it was suddenly hot and humid. Just in time for the 5th Hamburg Salsa Congress, yeahaaahhh! Oh my god I forgot to learn German! I’ve become so accustomed to understanding at least some of what’s going on around me and being able to communicate my wants and needs in French that I totally forgot what it would feel like to all of a sudden be in a country that speaks a language of which I am completely unfamiliar. am samstag um diese zeit bin ich nun schon von hh nach london geflogen und sitze dann in der ba maschine von london nach hong-kong,wo ich am sonntag gegen viertel nach 10 morgens in unserer zeit ankomme.da ist es dann viertel nach 5 nachmittags.habe eben die buchungsunterlagen vom reisebÃ¼ro gemailt bekommen....und mein rucksack steht fast fertig gepackt im flur..dank zip lock (gefrierbeutel mit zip) tÃ¼ten habe ich alle sachen mit manni's hilfevakuumverpackt klein reinbekommen und hab noch platz!!! Our final day in Berlin and our only day in Hamburg
