Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

So today was good as usual. I had a bit of a crisis with money, finding out the bank was charging me for pretty much every move I made. I am trying so hard to be good with my money, since I don't have all that much of it, especially with the reeeeally bad exchange rate. Last night after I posted, Joe called and said he was on his way over to my neck of the woods to go to O2( cell phone service place) to get his new SIM card. I met up with him over there, and we had [View Full Entry]

Hello all, Another great day in Hamburg. Didn't rain like it was supposed to (YAY) so that made for a pleasant trip to and from school. We were all having mixed feelings about having to wake up at 730 for class once again, but once I got Tylenol in my system (woke up with my head pounding- not good, luckily bryan had tylenol) it was off to Colon! We got there by UBahn easily and it only took about 10- 15 minutes, including walking and UBahn. There is a pretty amazing coffee shop on the end of Colonnaden, so we got [View Full Entry]

Today was another amazing day in the city! I got a late start (SOMEONE woke up late...) and Joe came over around 11:30, 12. Bryan was waiting for Mike who was just gettin in the shower, and I had already been waiting for hours... so we decided to split up. I went with Joe and later on Bryan and Mike went off together too. Joe and I took the U Bahn to Jungfernstieg. When you take the stairs up from the station the view is absolutely breathtaking.. all you see is water, right in front of you, boats, etc. Its not [View Full Entry]

Hello from Hamburg! Bryan and I arrived yesterday and have been so busy ever since! Yesterday I had no phone or internet so it was rough, but today was soo much fun and better with a connection to the outside world. Our buddy Stephen picked us up at the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) and from there he showed us our rooms in the hall. We immediately went out to dinner at some Turkish place, and it was really good. I had a 1/2 chicken and fries, and they werent lying about the half chicken. it was literally, half a chicken... one [View Full Entry]

Jetzt war es also so weit nach dieser Passkontrolle wuerde ich offiziell Japanischen Boden betreten und damit den ersten Schritt auf meiner Reise um die Welt tun. Christmas Market
The entrance to one of the many outdoor Christmas Markets in town. The food and the crafts were wonderful and the gluhwein was just what we needed to warm up.
The weekend after Prague I went to Hamburg with more friends. Our goals for the trip were simple - to visit the German Christmas markets and stock up on presents and ornaments, drink gluhwein and eat bratwurst, and have a fun weekend. Mission accomplished. My only regret is that we stayed out so late on Saturday night that we slept through the spectacle of thousands of Santas running around the lake in the middle of Hamburg on Sunday morning. Check out the photos here. http://www.laufsantalauf.de/santa_galerie.php?start_id=0025&suffix=santa_galerie_2007 Some sort of annual Sa [View Full Entry]

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving with Family and Friends back in the states. This was my first big holiday to miss with my family, and I have to admit it was a little hard. But I was determined to make sure that we had an authentic Thanksgiving here. Hosting my first Thanksgiving was tough, but there were many firsts and I ran into a few problems, just a few... The Pumpkin Pie. I managed to locate some Pumpkin Pie filling at the Karstadt downtown. They have an "american aisle", though small, is worth while. But if it gives [View Full Entry]

It's a little late but I had to write this entry "from Hamburg" so I could at least partially document the fact that I actually went there. My time with Michael and Bianca was absolutely wonderful... it was just what I needed. After an extremely stressful week, some relaxation - lack of thinking - and much needed bonding time with family members was very, VERY good for me. About the "stressful" week - I should clarify. It's GOOD stress. Craziness, but absolutely good. My internship event went extremely well, my expectations were surpassed. Not only that, but I've made some pretty [View Full Entry]

Its been a busy couple of weeks here with lots of friendly faces! I have spent this week trying to get back to normal with school and I have now started my German language class twice a week at nights. I skipped a couple of levels from September so that is promising and im looking forward to improving my skills even more! I am continuing to apply for internships in the spring and finish up my MBA applications for next year. I still find myself with a lot of time! I am trying to appreciate the fact that I am able [View Full Entry]

I have officially been in Hamburg for almost 3 weeks. Some things are going smoother than others, but as I'm learning, if you just keep following the wild goose chase, as silly as it may seem, you will figure out where you are supposed to be. I love my apartment. I am living with a girl named Tina, who speaks perfect American English. She is actually an English major at the Uni Hamburg and has rented her room out to 5 americans in the past years. Its a cute little room, with a bed, bookshelf, a couch (that folds out to [View Full Entry]
