Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Hello there Today was a day to breathe some fresh air and visit the Tierpark Hagebeck. A huge animal park on the outskirts of Hamburg. Although I prefer my animals in the wild, its an unfortunate fact of life that humans have encroached so much on habitats that some species can only be seen in captivity. Hagebeck does its job of conservation and education very well so I packed myself some lunch and wrapped up as warm as possible as it feels like the we've reached winter here already with a high of only 4C and headed into Hamburg. The best [View Full Entry]

You looking at me!

Martin and I hooked up in Hamburg for a fantastic weekend. Wonders of the internet meant that we had been able to arrange a venue to watch the AFL Grand Final with the Hamburg Dockers!! We had a very early start - 6.30am at an Irish Pub, watching the game. We then took a harbour/port cruise which was very interesting as it is a large working port and has thousands of containers and a floating dock for ship maintenance work. This was very cool, the ship sails into the dock, which has been sunk, they then pump the water out of [View Full Entry]

2nd February: There are those that do the bare minimum, becoming bored easily; there are others who live life to the full, looking on any situation as an opportunity. Namibian dozes off to a DVD; I make a Grand Tour of Sulfeld. This sleepy hamlet is not a village, Frank assures me, but a bustling metropolis. Well, I'll be the judge of that. Aha! There are two bakeries: a sure sign of a town worth visiting as far as I'm concerned. One can even have a haircut here. A walk round the communal pond seems a little safer than trekking alongside [View Full Entry]

I woke up in Lubeck at 730. This is actually sleeping in, as most days I wake up around 7 o'clock to breakfast with my family before they go to work/school. My class embarks on a walking tour with a very mustached man we meet by the river (don't worry, it's on purpose). He shows us some sights and tells us some facts, but I'm pretty sure everyone will only remember the mustache. And the marzipan shop that we invaded directly after the tour...yummmm. Time for the bus! We set off for Hamburg. I try to enjoy the scenery along the [View Full Entry]

Today we spent the day in north germany by the the north sea in a small town called st. peter Ording. We arrived yesterday late with the hopes of camping on the beach but it was too dark out to find a good place to camp so we ended up settling with a camp site. The next morning we woke up to rain the first time this trip. it wasnt as bad as it sounds. it was only a light rain. so we packed up, left the camp sight by twelve and headed for the beach. I had high hopes we [View Full Entry]

WEDNESDAY Wednesday we booked a hostel. I had spent all night seeking out our best options. We'd be staying three nights and wanted to be near city center so we wouldn't have to use the trains or busses. The best we could find were multy person dorm rooms. Everything else was extremely out of our budget. The way I saw it, I was going to Amsterdam, might as well make it the whole 'travel experience'! We booked two beds of a 12 bed room in a fairly well reviewed hostel. They had safe locked lockers and a bathroom for multiple rooms [View Full Entry]
