Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

all alone

Europe » Germany » District of Hamburg » Hamburg
This morning Cindy and daddy were in a rush, and they left me all alone and I didn't know what to do. There were a lot of things that daddy said he was going to do and leave for me but he forgot. I took a shower and then after that, since I ran out of deodorant, I went and bought some german Deo. The place that I went also had some food and shampoo and I looked at that but didn't get anything because I wanted to see if there was anything cheaper. Then after that I went to the [View Full Entry]

zoo!

Europe » Germany » District of Hamburg » Hamburg
We woke up and went to get some breakfast and then took the S-Bahn to Harburg. Then Gerd picked us up at the station and took us to the zoo. At the zoo we saw lots of cool animals and there were these pigs with hanging stomachs who we could pet and feed and there were also these deer that we could pet and feed. We also climbed a tower where we could see the Elbe from. At the end Cindy was trying to hug the pigs and they kept oinking and running away. Then we went to a bakery to [View Full Entry]

Hamburg tour

Europe » Germany » District of Hamburg » Hamburg
Last night I got a good night's sleep, yay! Then we went down to get some breakfast and their yogurt and juice wasn't cold so Cindy was complaining. Tomorrow we're going to try going elsewhere for breakfast to see if it's cheaper. Then at 10 AM Gerd came and took us to the handy shop and we got a handy for me. Then we took that back to the hotel and Gerd gave me my package of stuff that had lightened my suitcase to bring back to the hotel. Then we went on a bus tour and Cindy was falling asleep. Hamburg!

Europe » Germany » District of Hamburg » Hamburg
We woke up this morning and packed up quick and then called a taxi and headed to the train station. At the train station we got a little for breakfast and then caught the S-Bahn to the main train station. Then we were almost late for our train to Hamburg but we made it on time! So then I slept & listened to music on the train and I got some more yummy things. German trains give you these malted milk ball thingies called Knusperkugeln but I think you might only be able to get them in first class. So then [View Full Entry]

The only G-rated portion of this blog was dinner: In an effort to squirrel away some cash during this trip we have been eating many meals at grocery stores - I know fine European dining, right? Tonight it was Herring and tomatoes on German wheat bread with my favorite Chocolate, Ritler. bon appetite! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritter_Sport Tipping - And onto the reason half of you are reading this blog (And I realize I may be flattering myself in that anyone is reading this at all!) is how do you tip a European exotic dancer, and then a few notes on tipping in general. Instant Sleep
Instant Sleep
the best hostle ever
I shared a ride to Hamburg with a man named Sven and a nineteen year old guy who was serving his civil service time in the army. His station was in Bulgaria. I was dropped off at my hostel around 11pm/23:00 and I decided after taking a little walk around to find a cash machine that I would get a proper night sleep, as I had grown accustom to only having about four every night. I checked into Instant Sleep hostel, which is probably the best hostel I have ever stayed in. The people and atmosphere are amazing and the location [View Full Entry]

We are leaving! Warum 4 Jahreszeiten? Von dort a [View Full Entry]
