Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

We flew to Germany on Monday. To get to the airport in London, we had to take a train. I had never been on a train before, so that was a new experience. The airport in Lubeck was very small- 1 terminal, it made baggage claim and passport control easy. We had dinner at a greek restaurant, another new experience for me. I don't eat lamb, so finding a dish I could eat was challenging, especially since I know very little German. The beauty of this country is very striking. After spending five days in London, to see the green [View Full Entry]

Hamburg #2

(april 19 2007 after arriving from Bremen) It was almost midnight when Phydie and I walked around the St. Pauli's district of Hamburg. That road is packed with clubs and is the center of the nightlife in the city but the other attractions that you can find there are the sex shops. It is actually also called in german 'die sündige Meile' (The Sinful Mile in english).. We walked until we reached the harbour, which was totally desserted (I guess everyone is at the clubs in St. Pauli), and stayed for only half an hour and then went home because I [View Full Entry]

Today was a day of mixed emotions, I told you earlier that Pete and Nicole were keen to fly to Poland to go to Auschwitz but the flight connections made it impossible to do that. I personally was content to see the memorial to the holocaust in Berlin, I thought that would be the end. Well I have learnt not to give Pete a travel book to read and amuse himself while I am at my conference. He read of another infamous concentration camp Bergen-Belsen where among 100,000 people including Anne Frank died. So we set off on our mission to [View Full Entry]

We are now in Hamburg but I should back track a little because I was working under stressful conditions in Berlin, so my blog was short...with only the internet cafe to work from and no English from my friendly shop owner it was impossible to add photos. Berlin was great!!!our time with Nicole was priceless as well as being very expensive. Dean was reunited with his dad and so they were together - he has a very interesting family history from Berlin and he and his dad were off to trace their "roots". This left us exclusively with Nico...to shop and [View Full Entry]

After a long and tedious train journey, we arrived in Hamburg earlier today, and a fun time attempting to navigate their fun public transport system. I was sad to leave Amsterdam in some ways, but in other ways I didnät mind that much. I get the sense that Amsterdam is built up in the heads of so many people as the ultimate party\stoner town, whereas in fact its just a normal, funcitoning European city (of course) with a few different rules. Its also full of bloody scousers. So far Hamburg looks nice, but there is a key issue for tonight: We [View Full Entry]

This past week was actually quite busy, but definitely in a good way! On Tuesday (the 27th) the phone company actually did show up and hook up our internet, so I spent a lot of time on the computer this week, talking with friends on MSN and planning my trip to see Donny in Toulouse and Anita in Glasgow as well as my tour of the highlands. I leave tomorrow; I'm incredibly excited but also a little bit scared as this is the first trip I've ever planned by myself with just the internet to help me! Wish me luck! Last [View Full Entry]

Another week in Hamburg! I feel a little bit out of sorts with no structure to my week (no job, no planned weekly activities, etc.) so I think I'm going to need to start doing some things. Last week I called this woman named Veronika who sings in a choir that only practices once a week (as opposed to the Hamburg Monteverdi Chor, which practices Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of every second weekend for four hours each), but she never called me back. I also think a dance class would be fun, and might help me meet people! But I have [View Full Entry]

Me on Rickmer Rickmers

Happy anniversary to me! As of Saturday I've been here one whole month. Which doesn't mean I am any less homesick, or that my German is really any better than it was when I got here. I still get super nervous when someone kicks off a stream of fast German to me, and I still can't have a conversation.... but at least now if someone talks slowly I can understand what they are saying, espescially in "formal" places like supermarkets or at the train station. And I can follow conversations, even if I can't join in yet. So maybe.... just maybe... [View Full Entry]

Erotic Art Museum Main Floor
The Snail

Well, Lisa and I are almost completely moved into our new apartment now! The house is on the third floor of a lovely building in Wedel, very near to the train station and the main shopping street (super convenient!). It has loads of windows so I won't turn into a mushroom, and a really big kitchen with room enough for a fridge, freezer, and dining table. My and Lisa's rooms are also quite large, with enough floor space for two more bodies! There is no living room or den or anything like that, but the house is certainly big enough for [View Full Entry]
