We flew to Germany on Monday. To get to the airport in London, we had to take a train. I had never been on a train before, so that was a new experience. The airport in Lubeck was very small- 1 terminal, it made baggage claim and passport control easy. We had dinner at a greek restaurant, another new experience for me. I don't eat lamb, so finding a dish I could eat was challenging, especially since I know very little German.
The beauty of this country is very striking. After spending five days in London, to see the green of the German countryside was refreshing. There are places along the road that you can stop to pick tulips. The only things there are cutting tools and a box to put the money to pay for the tulips. The very first photo is one of these places.
On Tuesday, Amy & I took the day to recover from all the walking we did in London. We walked down to one of the shops close to their apartment for lunch. The fish was caught that day, so it was very fresh. We then had to go to another shop
to order french fries. Given my love of cheese fries, it should not be surprising that one of the few words I learned the actual spelling of in German was the one for french fries. All the shops are on the beach, so we were able to eat lunch while looking out on the water.
Amy & Michael's apartment is right on the Baltic, it is very peaceful. The first day it was very foggy, the first photo of the pier shows the fog. It was very windy and just a little cold at the beach, but once you got inland a little it was very warm.
The whole time we were in London, the only thing we did not do that was on our list was to have tea. We wanted to have tea in the afternoon with scones and clotted cream (well maybe not the clotted cream), but it just didn't work out- and was crazy expensive. It just happens there is a coffee shop among the shops on the beach where we finally had tea and cake.
The next day we went to Hamburg. We took a ferry across the harbor and saw some
Phone BoothSince I had a British one, why not a German one too.
very big ships up close. Many of you will find this surprising- I ate a German sausage (shinkenwurst- not sure I spelled that right) and liked it so much that the next day I had a sausage for lunch and another one for dinner. I rode the subway in Hamburg and was surprised how clean it was- the London Underground is not very clean and expected Hamburg's subway to be similar.
There are not so many pictures from Hamburg since we spent much of the time shopping- this should not be a surprise to any of you. I didn't buy any shoes, mainly because I didn't see any cute ones. No handbags in sight, so I had to be content with some new clothes.
Don't you just love the yellow phone booth? I already had a photo of a red one from London, so I thought I needed a German one to match it.

My parents worked for AT&T so I grew up with a myriad of phones in my house. I loved taking them apart and putting them back together. Just one of my many talents. I actually learned to "mute" a phone before it was invented. Another missed opportunity to be a millionaire. Anyway, I love that you can actually find homes and countrysides with hundreds of tulips. It's my second favorite (well, maybe 3rd) flower and I have a hard time just growing a few in my front lawn. Maybe that's a goal for next year...more tulips...move over Germany.
