Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Well, we’re here in Frankfurt now, packing up the room and I thought I’d take the chance to write while Josh is in the shower. Only another 4 hours left before we get on the plane, so we are leaving Europe very soon, and its bitter sweet. montag abend war noch nettes konzert und nettes rumhängen. und dienstag mittag ging es dann los nach berlin. um 1420 war ich in berlin. a. hat mich vom bhf abgeholt und wir sind zu h. gefahren. sachen abladen, kaffee trinken, rumhängen. dann sind wir zu a. gefahren, um seine neue whg anzuschauen. es fehlt zwar noch einiges, aber die wohnung ist schön und gut gelegen. kaffee trinken, einkaufen, pizza holen, doch nicht mehr zum konzert fahren, später wieder zu mir. wie super es ist, dass es hier so viele läden gibt, die mal eben bis 24h und so aufhaben. hamburg ist [View Full Entry]

Bonjour tout le monde, Je termine deja la derniere etape de mon periple: Berlin. Je suis arrivee ici dans la nuit de samedi a dimanche. Il faut dire que j'ai eu un choc ici: apres 3 semaines de chaleur et de soleil intenses, je dois affronter la pluie et le "froid" (je dois me promener en jeans). Last night was a great night of sleep! Yay I like this hotel. So we woke up and ate some of the chocolate cereal we got fromt he grocery store and I had my orange. Us at the Reichstag Parliament Buildings, Berlin

Hi, since our last posting we have continued our travels through eastern and central Europe, in particular taking in Vienna in Austria, Krakow in Poland, Prague in the Czech Republic, finally finishing up in Berlin. Vienna had on display all the monumental buildings from the Hapsburg's dynasty's time in power in Europe. I was right, I didn't get any sleep last night. The beds weren't even comfortable, I had to use a towel because the pillow was super lumpy and uncomfortable. Daddy was snoring and then when he woke up someone else was snoring because she had her nose pierced. Then I wanted to take a shower but had to wait until 6 AM. So when it was 6 I took a shower but the shower was super annoying and broken so I just shaved. Red Squirrel

Berlin was a facinating place to stay - for the main reason that so many events of recent historical significance have taken place there...war doesn't feel like a distant memory there. Our campsite was great, in a woodland next to Krossinsee, on the outskirts of Berlin we had Red squirrels and woodpeckers for neighbours, oh and some Germans too. Our first day sightseeing was ridiculously hot, mid 30s, and the kids weren't used to it. Hence playing in fountains and copious ice creams!
