Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Well, we’re here in Frankfurt now, packing up the room and I thought I’d take the chance to write while Josh is in the shower. Only another 4 hours left before we get on the plane, so we are leaving Europe very soon, and its bitter sweet. We want to be home and we want all those comforts, but exploring the world is really an amazing experience. But amazing experience or not, we’re leaving around 3pm local time (9am back home), and will be arriving around 5pm local time back in the Hoosier State. So let me recap you on the [View Full Entry]

Yes I am aware that Berlin isn't in Eastern Europe either. Well spotted, clever clogs. But in August 1961 it became a divided city where the east and west snarled at each other face to face over a ruthlessly-constructed wall that split families and friends and which drew the Iron Curtain across Europe. What better place to launch into the east from? A fairly dull half of the six hour journey from Amsterdam had elapsed when we entered Germany and two unsmiling police officers boarded to check passports. The Americans sitting next to us were asked to give the purpose of [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Last night was a great night of sleep! Yay I like this hotel. So we woke up and ate some of the chocolate cereal we got fromt he grocery store and I had my orange. Then we went to an internet cafe because we couldn't figure out the password to the network at the hotel and I updated my blog and then we went back and we decided to go to the church next door (Samariter-Kirche). So we went there and were really confused since it was all in German. It said it was an evangelical church but it seemed kinda [View Full Entry]

Hi, since our last posting we have continued our travels through eastern and central Europe, in particular taking in Vienna in Austria, Krakow in Poland, Prague in the Czech Republic, finally finishing up in Berlin. Vienna had on display all the monumental buildings from the Hapsburg's dynasty's time in power in Europe. We wandered around the Hoffberg palace complex and unfortunately learnt that the Spanish Riding School as well as all the opera singers were on holiday for the following three weeks :-( We did however delve into the Empress 'Sissi' museum as well as spending some time chec [View Full Entry]

I was right, I didn't get any sleep last night. The beds weren't even comfortable, I had to use a towel because the pillow was super lumpy and uncomfortable. Daddy was snoring and then when he woke up someone else was snoring because she had her nose pierced. Then I wanted to take a shower but had to wait until 6 AM. So when it was 6 I took a shower but the shower was super annoying and broken so I just shaved. Then I was starving and wanted food but daddy was annoying and wouldn't get any food for me [View Full Entry]

Berlin was a facinating place to stay - for the main reason that so many events of recent historical significance have taken place there...war doesn't feel like a distant memory there. Our campsite was great, in a woodland next to Krossinsee, on the outskirts of Berlin we had Red squirrels and woodpeckers for neighbours, oh and some Germans too. Our first day sightseeing was ridiculously hot, mid 30s, and the kids weren't used to it. Hence playing in fountains and copious ice creams! The DDR museum was great for the kids - they got to test drive a Trabi - the [View Full Entry]

Last week, after camp was over and after my night in Zuerich, I spent 5 days with a really cool girl in Berlin. I had never met her before -- her mom volunteers in my mom's ESL class every Thursday. This past spring when I was at a potluck that my mom's students had, I met Sarah's mom and she told me that her daughter lives in Berlin. I got her email address and wrote her to see if there was any way I could visit her in Berlin after I was done in Switzerland. She very graciously wrote back and [View Full Entry]
