Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Theres so much to do and see I think our three nights are going to be jam packed. We started well by going on a bike tour of the city on the first day. It was great because it took us to all the major sights around Berlin and the guide was great. There is so much history, we saw places like Hiltlers bunker and learnt about the last few days of his life. It was cool to see part of the Berlin wall which is standing, as a reminder to the city. We learnt about the WWII history and how [View Full Entry]

Berlin is an amazing city. The two trouble spots: 1. Having gotten accustomed to being able to navigate at a basic language level in a foreign country, I forgot the helpless feeling of not being able to communicate. Picture me trying to get a taxi driver to understand the scribble of an address I have on a piece of paper, it's midnight at the airport, and I habitually answer his German impatient remarks with 'si", que?!?!' and 'claro". Language barrier is part of the experience of being a foreign traveler and letting yourself fall into the rhythms of the unfamiliar sounds. [View Full Entry]

Ample Man
Ample Man
In places in East Berlin, they have Ample Man for their crossings. This has something to do with the Berlin Wall.
We started off the morning going on a walking tour. We went to a few places, which to be honest, I can't remember all the names for. Some real wicked architecture though. The Germans obviously have a lot of really bad history but are taking corrective steps to fixing what they can, which is really cool. There's pleanty of history throughout the city and lots of explainations for what has happened. Things like, the Monument of the Jewish Holocaust in the centre of town to commemorate the Jews. The monument caused a lot of controversy for reasons like: People thought it [View Full Entry]
