Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Cologne (Köln) 9-19-08 Greetings from Deutschland!! After an uneventful flight over, Köln appropriately greeted me with an anti - Neo-Nazi protest of 40,000 people. It seems these extremists thought it was a good idea to hold a Congress in this voraciously liberal and diverse city. The response was fierce. Taxi and transit drivers refused to transport them, hotels cancelled their reservations, and a group of them who managed to get on a riverboat tour were trapped on the water for hours waiting for angry protesters to subside. Even the local police were unsympathetic. Representative [View Full Entry]

We went on a tour yesterday and here are some of the sites. Majority of the tour was done in East Berlin as that's where most of the significant historic landmarks are. This post will be short and sweet, so check out the pictures section for a running commentary of the places we visited. Dorina [View Full Entry]

Guten Tag! Departing Brisbane International Airport: We arrived at the airport about 10:30, spent a bit of time with mine and Dorina’s family and then head off down to customs, duty free and boarding. After a failed attempt to convince Dorina that a $600 Tissot watch was a good idea for my wrist we went to board the plane which was to take off at 13:10. Because I haven’t been on a plane for about 15 years I was really looking forward to playing with all the stuff and pressing all the buttons I could. That however wore off after a [View Full Entry]

The BEST fast food in town.
We arrived at Merringdam U-Bahn Station mid morning it was cold, real cold, and did our best follow the directions to our hostel. Unfortunately I had forgotten to write to down the address of the place, all we had were directions that looked like they were written in German and put through a translation program on the Internet, not good. Half an hour to forty-five minutes later we arrived. The place looked clean, but a bit bland. We were staying in a 6 bed dorm, our room mates were a Canadian couple and a strange Italian guy, Marco, who was in [View Full Entry]

The complete glass walls of a bathroom in amsterdam... kind of awkward.
Hello Hello!!! Well I've been living in Berlin for two weeks, and I think that the easiest way to keep tabs on me is to start this blog... this is for you, Mom and Dad! We are having a very good time here. Berlin is very different from any city that I've been to in the U.S. They are extremely eco friendly here. Gas is about 9 American Dollars a gallon here (I still have yet to see a gas station), so many people cannot afford to have cars. I probably almost get run over a bicycler every day.
