Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Hot, hot & hot. Coming from the windy and rainy Auckland, I am enjoying another summer in Berlin. Cirque Du Soleil - Varekai It blew me away. The performances, the art, the music, the costumes - everything. At one point the clown who was dressed in a suite was singing a chanson by Jacque Brel - "Ne me quitte pas" it was. However he had to jump around, run through the whole arena and sit on guests in order to reach the spot light that was constantly moving while acting like a huge chanson singer. The performances, humour and sounds were [View Full Entry]

July 21 Today is a full day of travel. The plan was to take a train from Napoli to Milan, then one from Milan to Zurich, then an overnight train from Zurich to Berlin. In the overnight train, you can either get a private room with beds and bathroom, a cabin with 4 or 6 single beds which you share with other people, or reclining chairs. Since we are on a budget, we had to settle for the reclining chairs. Well, that was the plan. Of course, travelling in Italy is always an adventure in itself and nothing goes according to [View Full Entry]

i have certainly enjoyed my time in berlin. catrina and i have done a mish mash of things, getting a feel for our neighbourhood and exploring. wednesday evening i found a little home away from home: bikram yoga berlin. i had been craving it, and i found it. as soon as i arrived at the studio i felt at home. one of the instructors that i spoke to graduated teacher training with dann, who i have had the pleasure to work with at bikram yoga kw. the wednesday evening class was in english, so that was a nice way to ease [View Full Entry]

This past week in Berlin has been a week of contrasts. We have done so much that it's hard to believe that we have only been here a week. Tuesday was the day of my last quicky post, that day we took a walking tour of West Berlin. We walked through some of the major monuments and learned a lot about the city. Then that evening we went on a Pub crawl. This was when we meet a bunch of fellow travels, including the British Rugby team, and the American rowers. It was a fun night and we started to get [View Full Entry]

Berlin

Europe » Germany » District of Berlin » Berlin
After having several days off with a cold (in what is basically summer) we were both quite relieved to be heading to Berlin to do some more sightseeing, especially the Reichstag and the remains of the Berlin Wall. So after a very quick trip through the very flat East German countryside we arrived at Berlin Central station. As with all the other major German cities, Berlin's public transport was exceptional and made getting to our hostel very simple, although we did get off the S-Bahn (suburban train) one stop early and had to walk about a kilometre to the hostel, which [View Full Entry]

Brandenburg Gate
Brandenburg Gate
Built in 1793, the Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and is a huge symbol of Berlin. It survived WWII and was one of the few structures left in the rubble of 1945.
Guten Tag! Ich liebe Berlin! Yes, I made it... after about 16 hours of traveling, I made it, and I love it. Berlin is fantastic. The food is to die for, the people are lovely, the shopping is excellent, and the sites are incredible. No matter where you look, your bound to see a famous church, building, park, or something historically amazing. Every day that I go exploring I find myself bumping into famous sights that leave me awestruck. Needless to say, I have only lived in Berlin for 1 week and I love it already. So here's the low [View Full Entry]

A little miss communication with the ice cream vendor and Laura ended up with two cones instead of two scoops. I don't think she was too heartbroken
It has been far too long since I have posted, it has been surprisingly difficult to secure solid internet time, and when I have it has been for scrambling to find hostels. Right now I am still in Berlin, My sister left to go back to Colorado two days ago. It was so amazing to have her as a travel buddy, and we had a great time. Her travel style definitely wore me down, who knew standing and looking at artifacts could be so exhausting! But we saw some amazing artifacts, especially at the Pergamon Museum where Laura finally saw the [View Full Entry]

This is in Große Stern, where Obama gave his big speech.
So I didn't get to do any of the sightseeing I thought I was going to do in Berlin, but I did get another pretty cool opportunity instead: Barack Obama was giving his first (and only) speech in Europe today in Berlin, and I went! He's an amayingly charismatic speaker, and he didn't once consult notes or a prompter for what to say: amazing. While it wasn't a particularly policy-laden speech, he did at least mention a number of issues that I'm pretty enthused about: nuclear disarmament, opening talks with Iran, addressing the genocide in Darfur, and immigration reform were among [View Full Entry]

catrina and i are settling into berlin nicely. we went on a fantastic walking tour of the city yesterday. walking through the jewish memorial site was very overwhelming, powerful, almost anxiety inducing, because of its structure. there are basically just concrete pillars in rows of varying heights. so at some points they tower over you, and others they only come up to your shin. it was very moving. the same company also runs a pub crawl, so we decided to hop on that bandwagon. again, itīs fun to meet other travels to swap stories with. we enjoyed bouncing between the rugby [View Full Entry]
