Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Hello all, So we're still in Berlin, which is such an awesome city! While the exchange rate with the US $ kind of sucks, Germany is actually less expensive than other European countries...still pricey though. Much of the city is under construction, including the bridge outside of our hostel, which makes getting to and from the hostel... interesting. On the walking tour I took yesterday the construction throughout the city was also clearly visible, remnants of not only WWII, but the hard economic times the country has faced ever since then. As I said earlier, its been gloomy and [View Full Entry]

Berlin. Day 21 We had to wake up early today to pack the coach and leave for a long drive to Berlin, with many of the group feeling under the weather due to the night before. On the way we stopped off in Dresden, in Germany, a place that was flattened during WW2, but had been rebuilt using the pieces of the original buildings that had been destroyed during the Blitz. Dresden’s buildings therefore look rather dirty and worn, a result of the fire bombs that scorched everything in the city. Apart from this, the city was rather nice, but full [View Full Entry]

We got into berlin pretty late & we were exhausted from the past 48 hrs trying to fit everything in so we decided to do laundry, make some calls, & not go explore. The hostel we were in though was nothing like we had stayed in yet. It was dorm like & huge. It even had its on beer garden, which didn’t make since to us because the whole point of going to different cities is to try them out & really experience the city. We decided to use the place simply for sleeping & laundry & a quick breakfast in [View Full Entry]

The symbol of Berlin is the bear, so they are all over the city.
I made it! Yes, thats right, the girl who got lost in Carlsbad last week, even though she's lived in San Diego her whole life, managed to make it, not just half way around the world, but across a country in which she doesn't speak the language and navigate a foreign city. Aren't you proud of me? As you may be able to tell, I have officially made it to Berlin, after a 10 hr flight from LAX to Frankfurt and a 4 hr train ride from Frankfut. The journey was, um, interesting...a lot less people speak English then you would [View Full Entry]

Well we seem to have missed out on our Moscow trip a bit and jumped straight to Berlin. The free internet doesn,t allow for photo downloads so I,ll leave it just now. Suffice to say we found it interesting but trying! Berlin has been a real hit - the girls are in their element practising their German and eating pretzels. We had a leisurely German brunch yesterday in the cool area we are staying in. Apparently the adjective trendy just shows how old I am!!! We hit the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Wall Gallery [View Full Entry]

Like, literally. It was stormy almost all day today; fortunately, the rain showers were brief and infrequent, and the air was mostly warm, but we fought against strong winds nearly everywhere we walked! After Frühstück (breakfast) at our Pension (Hotel/B&B) this morning, we headed out to see Berlin, without exactly a clear plan for the day. The proprietor of the Pension was most helpful last night in suggesting the most efficient modes of travel to the sights in Berlin, all of which involve at least one bus and usually at least two trains. We did a bit of shopping near the [View Full Entry]

Today was my last day with Joscha and we decided to do some more "Touristy" stuff. We woke up ate breakfast, and went to take the S Bahn to the Berlin Zoo. When we got off the train we went down to the booking agent and also figured out my tickets for my trip to Dijon. The booking agent told me that I could not go through Belgium to get to Paris without paying for an entire ticket through Belgium as well. Joscha told me that there was basically no way to not go through Paris to get to Dijon as [View Full Entry]

Lazy Sunday, Wake up in the late afternoon. Wake up Joscha just to see how he's doing. "Yo what up Joscha" "Yo Fiskers whats crackin" "You thinkin' what I'm thinking?" "Sport Spielen, Man it's happenin" "But first nutella calls, lets go walk down the hall" That was my morning :) We woke up around 11:30, ate a breakfast of Nutella, bread, and cereal and went to play battlefield 2 with Joscha and his brother. I took both him, his brother, and 20 bots single handily in 4 different rounds. The Germans don't have much fight left in em' I guess. Anyways [View Full Entry]

Schönefeld Airport
Oops a daisy. I put the alarm on for 05.00. Woke up. Put my watch in my hand. Went back to sleep again. So unlike me! Hurry up!! We needed to be at the airport between 07.30 and 08:00 as the Easyjet Flight was to leave at 09:10. I don't like to get to the airport too early when I fly with “The Small Young Gentleman”. Its hard work!! I squashed everything and packed our suitcase and backpack to the limit. My God, the backpack was heavy. The Eurohostel was a few minutes away from Glasgow Central Station and so we [View Full Entry]
