Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

museums...

We started off the morning going on a walking tour. We went to a few places, which to be honest, I can't remember all the names for. Some real wicked architecture though. The Germans obviously have a lot of really bad history but are taking corrective steps to fixing what they can, which is really cool. There's pleanty of history throughout the city and lots of explainations for what has happened. Things like, the Monument of the Jewish Holocaust in the centre of town to commemorate the Jews. The monument caused a lot of controversy for reasons like: People thought it [View Full Entry]

On the bus at 8am and off to Berlin. We got out 'morning song' today. The monrning song is a song that's plaeyed every morning when we leave. It's a Canadian Irish song called "Home for a Rest" by a band called Spirit of the West. By george it rules. The trip is supposed to be our longest journey for the entire tour. We arrived at about 4pm and went to the Brandenburg gate, the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, The tear garden, a Russian Monument and the Reichstag. I'm really enjoying Berlin thus far. The city is laid out really well, there's [View Full Entry]

I feel like I have only just scratched the surface when it comes to the history of Berlin. And yet in my 4 days there Rowena and I packed so much in. We went to 5 museums, plus a day trip out to Sachenshausen Concentration Camp, plus two 5 hour walking tours! We also went up the TV tower for a posh lunch in the revolving restaurant while looking out to the great city. We walked along the East Side Gallery (where some of the wall remains and graffiti artists have covered it in symbolic paintings.) While walking along there I [View Full Entry]

Kathryn was worried Berlin would be more expensive that the rest of the places visited. This was luckily not the case and we even found a cheap campsite 10min walk from the main train station, practically in the city centre. The campsite used to be a public pool and was rather cramped and run down but we weren’t too bothered. On of our regrets during our trip to large cities was not using the city bus tours. These are perfect if you are short of time but have lots to see. What a disaster. The tour was supposedly In German and [View Full Entry]
