Our fav city so far is Berlin! It was an amazing mix of old buildings and incredible modern architecture and history everywhere you look. Lots of art and music as well!
On our first day we went on a walking tour about the 3rd Reich. Most of the buildings had been bombed or destroyed but we went to the places where they used to be and our guide was fantastic. We stood above the spot where Hitler committed suicide, it used to be his private bunker but now it's a carpark. Also, the spot where the massive building that was the Nazi headquaters used to be is now a chinese resteraunt.
We were walking down the street in Berlin and bumped into a friend who did Jazz with Alice in Perth and ended meeting up at a jazz club later on. We saw the guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkle doing a crazy free jazz set and drank some German beer!
On our second day we went to the Jewish memorial which is an emourmous square covered in different sized concrete blocks. It is meant to make you feel disorientated as you walk through it. Underneath we went through an exhibition
detailing some of the atrocities committed by the Nazi's against the Jewish people. Next stop was the outdoor exhibition called the "topography of terror" which is set up in the destroyed remnants of the building which housed the Gestapo and the SS. This is the place where most of the Nazi's worst actions were planned. It was also a prison for political prisoners. We also discovered a miniture alpine village complete with snow slope setup in the middle of the city! Just to get everyone excited about their winter skiing holidays. We had a hotdog..
Next day we went to the Stasi museum which had lots of exhibits with crazy spy gadgets and the history of the oppression of the people of East Germany by the communist regime. We also went to the last standing part of the Berlin wall and an outdoor exhibition telling some of the history of the wall.
On our last day we went to the Pergamon Museum which is mostly an ancient history museum. Lots of Ancient Roman and Greek stuff and also some Babylonian stuff as well including the Ishtar Gate. It was a massive museum built especially to house the massive
pieces of ancient buildings!! To finsh off we went to the Berlin zoo which was practically deserted so it was just us and the animals. We saw the lions and tigers being fed..yay!
Got up early next day to get the 7am train to Krakow in Poland!
